Why is myopia control so important? Short-sightedness, or myopia, is a common finding in eye exams that leads to kids needing to wear glasses or contacts full time. Some people may think of it as a minor inconvenience, but the truth is, high levels of myopia can lead to serious eye health problems later in life.
Myopia typically occurs due to the eye growing abnormally long. This stretches the retina, which is the innermost layer of the eye, responsible for sensing what we look at. A stretched retina is more prone to tearing and detaching, which, if not treated urgently, can lead to permanent loss of vision in part or all of the eye.
Myopia can also lead to macular degeneration through a similar mechanism. The stretched eye leads to thinning of the retina and underlying layers, which can lead to cell death around the macula. The macula is the part of the eye responsible for central and detailed vision; when this area degenerates, it can result in significant difficulty performing daily tasks such as reading, driving, and cooking.
Optometry Australia lists myopia as a risk factor for glaucoma, a progressive eye disease that causes gradual loss of the peripheral visual field, and if left untreated, can lead to complete blindness.
