So true. And speaks to the heart of what we do at CAPable Hearing Solutions.
It’s baffling. In a world where clinicians passionately argue for the superiority of their services over over-the-counter solutions, I’m constantly asked about apps for treating complex conditions like auditory processing disorder (APD). 🤔
If you injured your shoulder would you download an app to fix it? Of course not! You would work with a trained physical therapist or other medical doctor.
Yet, in Audiology, we seem to be heading down a path where we expect technology to be a quick fix for everything, even intricate health concerns.
Have we gotten lazy with our healthcare?
As an audiologist and owner of a digital APD treatment product, I see both sides. I’m thrilled about technical advancements like streamlined reporting that saves me hours. But no matter how advanced tech gets, it can’t replace the human connection for the relational work we do. At some point in the auditory training process things get really hard and you need someone who can guide you through it.
We need to preserve the “deep work”—the personalized care that truly makes a difference. I’d much rather hear, “Do you know who does this work in my area?” than “What app can I use?” When someone asks about an app, it suggests they believe in a one-size-fits-all solution. (By the way, you can find the nearest clinician to you here: www.APDsupport.com/apdmap.)
The truth is, those of us who provide high level auditory training are irreplaceable. We tailor programs to each individual’s needs, paving the way for meaningful improvements in their lives. We walk the journey with them which creates richness in their lives and a meaningful career for us.
Let’s not lose sight of the importance of human connection and comprehensive treatment in healthcare. While digital tools can be valuable adjuncts, they can never replace the expertise and personalized care of a trained professional.
