Autism is a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition. It affects how people experience, interact with, and relate to the world around them. Autism affects people differently – which is why there’s a common saying: “If you’ve met one Autistic person, you’ve met one Autistic person.”

Autistic people have different experiences and need different levels of support.

There are many misunderstandings about autism that can be harmful, and these can make it harder for Autistic people to access the support they need.

Here are some facts about autism that are often misunderstood:
🧠 Most Autistic people want to make friends, though some may find this difficult.
🧠 Autistic people experience the same range of emotions as other people, they may just express them differently.
🧠 Autism is defined by differences in social communication and behaviours, not intelligence. Intellectual disability or high intelligence may co occur with autism.
🧠 There is no cure for autism, but Autistic people can develop skills for life with the right support.

Autistic people have great strengths which should be celebrated. These include:
🧠 Noticing patterns, details, or inconsistencies that others may miss.
🧠 Deep focus and persistence, particularly when working on areas of interest.
🧠 Honesty, integrity, and direct communication, which can support trust and clarity in relationships.

Our Senior Behaviour Support Practitioner Avril attended a special World Social Work Day event in the city this morning to recognise and celebrate the impact social workers make in our community.

Hosted by the SA Branch of the Australian Association of Social Workers, guests enjoyed networking over a breakfast, while hearing from several guest speakers including Katrine Hildyard MP (pictured with Avril).

The theme for this year's World Social Work Day is ‘Co-Building Hope and Harmony: A Harambee Call to Unite a Divided Society’, which highlights the vital role of social work in bringing people together across communities, cultures and systems to shape a more inclusive and sustainable tomorrow.

On Wednesday, Jessica and Avril from our team attended a NDIS business networking event - Psychosocial Pathways, which explored best practice for psychosocial NDIS participants and people impacted by mental health challenges.

The event built a solid understanding of client needs, with insights from industry experts and lived experience workers.

It also highlighted the importance of quality psychosocial practice, state-wide mental health investment and stronger collaboration across services. Overall it was a great event for some of our Elcies leaders 😊

We had a lot of fun at the Source Disability Expo last weekend at the Adelaide Convention Centre 😊

Members from our Better Self Speech Pathology team and colleagues at Elcies Positive Behaviour Support enjoyed meeting families over the weekend and speaking with them about the services offered at Lutheran Care.

It was also a great opportunity to see what other services and supports are out there in the community. Thanks to everyone that dropped by!

Thank you so much to K for leaving this excellent review for Elcies' Positive Behaviour Support service on Google. We love to hear that our team is making such a positive difference to families.

"I am so grateful for the support we have received for our child with complex needs from Jessica and Sarah in the Behaviour Support Team at Elcies. Their work is thorough, thoughtful, and clearly grounded in best-practice approaches. Other professionals involved in our child's care have commented positively on the quality of their work, which speaks volumes.

"Communication has been excellent, and they consistently demonstrate empathy, patience, and a genuine willingness to listen and help wherever possible. We have felt well supported throughout, and I would highly recommend this organisation."

Today is International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD).

In this video, the IDPwD 2025 Ambassadors discuss their big questions on how we can build a more inclusive society. We think it's essential viewing.

Let's continue to listen to and learn from people with disabilities and move toward a richer society where people with disabilities can experience seamless inclusion in every level of community life.

Some members of our Positive Behaviour Support team and colleagues from Better Self attended the Kids and Youth Disabilities Expo (KYD-X) last Friday and Saturday 😊

Held at Netball SA Stadium, this event gave us the opportunity to speak with more than 200 individuals/families about how our PBS and Speech Pathology services can support them.

It was also great to see Lutheran Care Clinical Leads Dr Jessica Howe and Dr Michelle Swift participating in a Q&A on the main stage on Friday, speaking about their areas of expertise.

Thanks to the organisers for putting on a wonderful event 🙏
