Get ready for one of the most powerful and breathtaking sky shows of the year. On the night of September 7 into the early hours of September 8 the Moon will transform into a glowing red orb in a rare total lunar eclipse also known as a Blood SuperMoon.
This stunning event happens when the Earth comes directly between the Sun and the Moon casting a massive shadow across the lunar surface. But instead of going completely dark the Moon turns a deep red or copper colour. This mysterious glow is caused by sunlight bending through Earthβs atmosphere and filtering out the blue light. What is left is the dramatic red tint that gives this event its name.
What makes this eclipse extra special is its massive reach. Nearly 85 percent of the worldβs population will be able to witness it making it one of the most widely visible eclipses in human history. In the USA the show begins late on September 7. East Coast viewers will see it high overhead while those on the West Coast will catch the blood red Moon rising or setting near the horizon. In Europe skywatchers will experience the eclipse just before dawn on September 8.
You do not need any special equipment to enjoy this natural wonder. Just step outside to a dark open space with a clear view of the sky. Binoculars or a small telescope can help reveal even more detail but your eyes alone will capture the magic.
Each lunar eclipse is different and the exact shade of red depends on Earthβs atmosphere at that time. So this one will be totally unique.
Make it a night to remember with your friends and family. This is one celestial event you do not want to miss.
