Avoiding ACL surgery🦵
Cross bracing protocol is a non surgical treatment to facilitate the natural healing of a torn ACL by bracing the knee at a 90 degree angle. The treatment begins as soon as possible following an ACL injury and spans approximately 12 weeks.
Throughout the protocol, supervised Physio is essential to maintain muscle strength and joint function.
Studies show 90% of ACLs show healing on MRI at 3 months - with 92% returning to sport. This suggests that the protocol may be a viable alternative to surgical intervention for certain patients.
Eligibility for the cross bracing protocol depends on several factors including:
- Thetiming of the injury
- The extent of the ACL tear
- The patients overall health and activity level
The decision will be made collectively between you, your surgeon or sports doctor and your Physio as there may be risks involved.
