Over forty years of medical research - a journey of discovery, success and outcomes www.perroninstitute.org
Perron Institute is a world leader in neurological science and study, a global collaborator, a community campaigner, a research advocate, a futuristic visionary, a progressive, patient-focused organisation and home to Western Australia’s most successful break-through research team. The Perron Institute is an international leader in taking findings from the laboratory and developing advances in neu
rological care for the benefit of the community. At the cutting edge of neurological research in Perth, Western Australia, the Perron Institute collaborates with scientists and clinicians nationally and internationally. Neurological disorders are a leading cause of disability worldwide.
With increased awareness, we can take steps toward earlier detection, better outcomes, and improved brain health for every stage of life.
That’s why this year’s World Federation of Neurology World Brain Day theme of "Brain Health for All Ages" is so important.

Professor Merrilee Needham has been appointed to the leadership role of Perron Institute Medical Director.
Professor Needham is a Consultant Neurologist and Head of Myositis Research at the Perron Institute and Personalised Medicine Centre at Murdoch University. She is also Foundation Chair of Neurology and Consultant Neurologist at Fiona Stanley Hospital, Murdoch University and The University of Notre Dame Australia.
Professor Needham said “A big picture goal is to create stronger integration between clinical services and scientific research. This begins with the clinical care of patients, allowing them to be part of scientific discoveries, and then bringing these discoveries back to patients through clinical trials. The aim is to ensure research is patient-centred and relevant, ultimately improving outcomes for our community.”

Help Shape the Future of Depression Treatment
Have you had success with antidepressant treatment? Researchers at the Perron Institute want to hear from you!
We’re studying the genetic factors behind treatment-resistant depression, and your experience could help. All it takes is 15minutes of your time and a simple saliva sample—and you'll receive a free personalised pharmacogenetic report as a thank you.
• Aged 15 or older
• Responded well to antidepressants
Your voice matters. Your experience can make a difference.
A survey for people who cared for someone with Motor Neurone Disease (MND).
We know that caring for someone with MND can be incredibly hard—physically, emotionally, and mentally. It’s a tough and often heartbreaking journey that ends with the loss of someone you deeply love. By sharing your experiences, you can help improve care for other families walking the same path.
A team of experienced researchers at the Perron Institute, led by Professor Samar Aoun AM and Dr Julie Brose, is inviting people who have lost a loved one to MND since 2021 to take part in an online survey, before end of August 2025.
We were delighted to welcome Brayden, Nadia and their daughter Olive to Perron Institute yesterday, to thank them for fundraising in the HBF Run for a Reason for the second year.
Neurologist Dr Wayne Yau and Postdoctoral researcher Abbey Figliomeni spoke about their research paper on Dystonia, and CEO Steve Arnott spoke about genome sequencing and research into rare diseases at Perron Institute in partnership with the Personalised Medicine Centre at Murdoch University.
