-- ON VACCINATIONS --
As a medical research institute with a firm basis in science and health, our stance on the vaccination issue is firm. They're the single most cost-effective health intervention that we've ever had. User comments or posts that push an alternative agenda out to the public are not only factually incorrect, but they are dangerous and misleading. Due to a handful of outspoken repeat offenders on this issue, those who continue to push a message that is at odds with our official stance on this issue will be hidden or banned. Last week, during National Diabetes Week, we launched a clinic that is changing the way we support families on the early-stage type 1 diabetes (T1D) journey. 💙

Located at Perth Children’s Hospital, this is Australia’s first co-designed early-stage T1D clinic, built through a unique collaboration between WA families and researchers and clinicians from the Rio Tinto Children's Diabetes Centre at The Kids Research Institute and the Diabetes Department at Perth Children’s Hospital.

The clinic supports children identified through screening as likely to develop T1D, offering tailored education and guidance at the earliest possible stage.

While another early-stage clinic exists in Australia, this is the first to be co-designed with families, clinicians and researchers to ensure it truly meets community needs.

The clinic was made possible thanks to a Telethon7 Perth funded research project that explored what families needed most at this early stage.

To our community, a heartfelt thank you. Our EOFY campaign has now wrapped up, and thanks to your generosity, we’ve raised vital funds to support children and families everywhere.

These funds directly support the life-changing research happening at The Kids to improve the lives of children and their families – families like Adele’s, who spent 11 days in hospital after she contracted Strep A.

Your gift makes a real impact – thank you for thinking of The Kids.

⚠️ Sports betting and fantasy sports gambling are putting young Aussie men at serious risk of problem gambling.

A new study by The Kids Research Institute Australia has revealed that young men aged 18-25 who gamble on sports or play fantasy sports are far more likely to develop problem gambling behaviours– and the risks are even greater for those experiencing depression.

Lead author Dr Vincent Mancini says young men are more vulnerable to forms of gambling with a ‘skill-based’ element, yet they’re often the least likely to seek help due to stigma.

With Australia recording some of the world’s highest gambling losses per capita, this research is a wake-up call.

This NAIDOC Week, we proudly celebrated the theme The Next Generation: Strength, Vision and Legacy – a fitting theme for us at The Kids following the recent launch of our Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan and second edition of The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Research Standards.

We are enriched by the contributions of more than 90 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff across The Kids – including Elders, researchers, professional services staff and students – whose strength and vision help shape healthier futures for children.

Our celebrations included a NAIDOC Week Morning Tea featuring a Welcome to Country by Noongar man Nick Abraham, a performance by dance group Bilya Booladarlung and reflections from both established and emerging Aboriginal leaders at The Kids.

Staff also enjoyed a Noongar language session hosted by Dylan Collard from Kalyakoorl , as well as NAIDOC-themed activities in the Discovery Centre – inspiring connection, learning and cultural celebration throughout our community.

🎨💃🏽 When science meets creativity, magic happens!

Over a 10-week period, students participating in the Waalitj Foundation's after school club in Lathlain explored the world of germs and vaccines through movement, play and art!

Led by Noongar Yamatji artist Kyle Morrison, the students created powerful pieces of artwork (check out the collage! 👇), acted out how germs move, and even played new versions of favourite games like ‘Red Light, Green Light’ to bring infection control to life.

Along the way, our Wesfarmers Centre of Vaccines and Infectious Diseases team also discovered valuable insights into what young people think and feel about vaccines—helping us shape better health messaging for the future.

Chance Flowers had just turned four when he was hospitalised for two weeks with Invasive Strep A.

The bacteria entered his bloodstream and caused sepsis, settling into his knee and hip joint, causing severe pain. It took Chance almost a year to learn to walk again.

Researchers from the Wesfarmers Centre for Vaccines and Infectious Diseases at The Kids are now deliberately infecting tonsil tissue with Strep A in the laboratory, as part of groundbreaking research to develop a vaccine against this deadly bacteria.

While Strep A can cause mild infections in some, it can be deadly in others — claiming around 500,000 lives worldwide each year.

This new research project is part of wide-reaching efforts at The Kids to develop a vaccine for the deadly bacteria.
