Our thoughts are with everyone affected by the current bushfires. This is a challenging time for many in our community, and we are thinking of all those impacted, including emergency services and volunteers working tirelessly to keep others safe.

Please remain vigilant and fire-aware, and ensure you have an action plan in place if your surroundings or residential area are at risk. Stay informed, follow local emergency advice, and be prepared to act early if conditions change.

With the extreme heat, it’s also important to be aware of heat exhaustion. Symptoms may include dizziness, headache, nausea, fatigue, muscle cramps, or feeling faint. Move to a cool place, drink water, and rest.

Seek urgent medical help if symptoms worsen, you are unable to cool down, you experience confusion, collapse, or stop sweating, or if you are worried about your health or that of someone else.

Please take care of yourselves, check in on vulnerable family members, neighbours, and friends, and stay safe.

CFA (Country Fire Authority) VicEmergency

08/01/2026

Victoria continues to experience severe to extreme heatwave conditions and elevated fire risk across the state.

Today max temperatures are expected to reach 42-46Β°C in the north, 35-38Β°C in Gippsland, 22-25Β°C on the SW coast and 26-34Β°C elsewhere. A Total Fire Ban has been declared today (8 January) for the Mallee, Northern Country, North East and North Central districts.

Two significant fires are burning in Mount Lawson and Longwood with multiple warnings in place and hundreds of firefighters on scene. We urge those in the surrounding areas to follow the warnings on VicEmergency.

Victorians are urged to prepare for worsening fire conditions tomorrow (9 January). The Wimmera, Northern Country, and North Central districts are currently forecast to reach a Catastrophic Fire Danger Rating, with Extreme currently forecast for the remainder of the state.

A Catastrophic Fire Danger Rating means conditions will be the most dangerous for a fire and if a fire starts and takes hold, lives and homes are likely to be lost.

🌑️ Stay cool by wearing light, loose clothing, drinking plenty of water and closing windows and blinds early to limit heat entering your home. For more info and resources: www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/extreme-heat
