🦟 Japanese Encephalitis (JE) Update – Are You Eligible for the Free Vaccine?
JE virus has recently been detected near Horsham, marking the first detection of the 2025/26 mosquito season. With increased mosquito activity, it’s important to know if you’re protected.
✅ Who Can Get the Free JE Vaccine?
You’re eligible if you are 2 months or older and:
Live or work in an eligible high-risk LGA, and
Meet any of the following:
Spend a lot of time outdoors (work or recreation)
Live in housing with poor mosquito protection (caravans, tents, no screens)
Are experiencing homelessness
Work with pigs or on farms/piggeries
Work in mosquito control, environmental health, or disaster response
Are present at properties with suspected or confirmed JE in animals
Medicare is not required.
💉 Vaccine Options
Imojev: Single-dose vaccine (9 months+).
JEspect: Two-dose vaccine (from 2 months+ or for those unable to receive live vaccine).
Protection develops:
14 days after Imojev
28 days after completing JEspect
🔄 Do You Need a Booster?
Booster recommendations depend on your first vaccine:
Imojev (given under 18 years old):
➤ Booster recommended 1–2 years later if you’re still at risk.
Imojev (given at 18+):
➤ No routine booster needed (unless advised).
JEspect (any age):
➤ Booster recommended 1–2 years after the 2-dose course if you remain at risk.
