Increased Fire Danger in Autumn of 2026

The AFAC Seasonal Bushfire Outlook for autumn 2026 identifies a heightened risk of bushfire in NSW, Victoria and WA.

Increased risk of fire in autumn has been identified for regions in southern, central, and eastern NSW, large parts of Victoria, extending to parts of southeast SA. Also at risk are parts of southern WA.

Communities are encouraged to be vigilant and stay alert throughout autumn and seek the latest advice from their local fire authority.

The Seasonal Outlook is the culmination of a complex analysis by expert fire specialists across Australia, and climate prediction and fire weather experts from the Bureau of Meteorology.

Bushfires are still impacting communities across Victoria, with a State of Disaster declared in parts of the state due to severe weather conditions.

During bushfires and extreme heat conditions, knowing some basic first aid can help protect yourself and others until help arrives. St John Ambulance Victoria encourages all community members to prioritise safety and seek medical help whenever needed, and remember to:

✔️ Avoid smoke exposure where possible
✔️ Stay hydrated and look out for one another

This year, 285 new volunteers joined us across Victoria from all walks of life. Within our teams of volunteers, we have First Responders, Nurses and Doctors ensuring we are prepared for any patient that enters our care.

Thunderstorm Asthma - Warning for the State. Please if you are Asthmatic please keep you medication close by.

Grass pollen season started last week and will continue until the end of the year. During this time, there is a risk of thunderstorm asthma.

Throughout the season, you can view a 3-day thunderstorm asthma risk forecast on the VicEmergency website.

🟢🟠🔴 Forecasts are colour-coded from low (green) to moderate (orange) to high (red).

The forecast is not a warning, but helps you understand the risk so you can prepare ahead of time.

Weather Warning - State Wide. Please beware of the weather conditions in the area you are traveling. If you don't need to be travel outside you own area stay at home.

A Severe Weather Warning for Damaging and locally Destructive Winds has been issued across all forecast districts for tomorrow, Wednesday, 22 October.

We're expecting Damaging winds to develop over most of the state, with locally destructive wind gusts possible about the southwest coast from the late morning.

Locations which may be affected include Horsham, Warrnambool, Bendigo, Shepparton, Seymour, Maryborough, Ballarat, Geelong, Melbourne, Wangaratta, Traralgon and Bairnsdale.

Now is the time to prepare. Community members can prepare by safely securing loose items such as outdoor furniture, trampolines and umbrellas and by parking vehicles undercover or away from trees where possible. Victorians are also encouraged to limit unnecessary travel, particularly in coastal and heavily wooded areas.
