The Conclusion of an Era

The last eight weeks have been filled with some memorable trips down memory lane for many of our clients and, of course, ourselves.

With Gregory’s 45 years of clinical experience and 38 years of practice together building our multidisciplinary centre, looking back through the eyes of so many grateful clients has been both joyful and humbling.
Yes, there have been a few tears and a lot of hugs and well wishes for our future.

Many of you have keenly expressed interest in Gregory’s future writings as well as requests for us to impart knowledge through teachings and public talks.
Perhaps you could tell us what those talks and teaching subjects might look like from your perspective?

Looking back, our heartfelt gratitude extends to all who have shared our journey, particularly the dedicated practitioners that offered naturopathy, herbal medicine, and homeopathy. Bodywork modalities including shiatsu, osteopathy, Bowen, and massage therapies.
Also, psychology, psychotherapy, and hypnosis.
Additionally, acupuncture, Chinese medicine, and fertility management.
Diagnostics including Dark Field microscopy, urine and saliva analysis, and electrodermal testing for a vast range of foods, substances, and medicines.

Gosh, and the list goes on!

Additionally, thank you to the wonderful reception, dispensary, and bookkeeping staff and, of course, our innovative son Joshua who transitioned us into the modern technology age, streamlining everything as practice manager.

Not forgetting the many keen naturopathic students who undertook their ‘eye-opening’ clinic hours with us, including students of second-year nursing and fourth-year medicine, who all bought something valuable to our practice.

Then, of course, there was the large community room that accommodated many classes and workshops, including yoga, specialty Food as Medicine cooking classes, environmental health subjects, genetics, feng shui, astrology, and just about every conceivable health and mind-related subject.

In 2011, we were honoured to receive the Small Business of the Year award for our services, and we were further rewarded by being assisted by other educational bodies to make training videos that encouraged other young practitioners on their career paths.

It’s been a fast-paced, fulfilling, and yes, at times challenging journey which has only served to strengthen us as a couple towards betterment in all aspects of ourselves and our careers through helping others.

Thank you to everyone who has sent us both and Alison heartfelt messages, gifts, and cards. It’s been an honour and privilege to assist you all.

Finally, thanks to Katrina and Trav from La Bell Wellness for providing space for us in our graceful wind-down over the last eight months. 🙏🏼 🌟

And now ……. to continue our journeying within and without, exploring this magnificent, beautiful, diverse, and powerful land that is our home.

After almost 13 years on this platform it’s time 👣

We have enjoyed the concept of sharing with family and friends, especially when travelling and staying connected with loved ones living far apart in other countries.

The many health related posts, creating a garden, growing veggies and both culinary and medicinal herbs.

We haven’t enjoyed the algorithms that control reach, feed and advertising nor the censorship.

The divisive nature of the emojis and the resulting opinions people can form which are often skewed due to a lack of any meaningful conversation with the authors. Sadly we have seen resulting bullying of those we love in these situations.

I recall years ago saying “you can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave” !

I certainly hope something comes from the brave whistleblowers account and the others who are now offering to stand up against the dichotomy of values this platform espouses. Video of whistleblower below in comments.

For those who value our conversation and connection we are delighted to stay in touch via email;

We will of course be back after our sabbatical, just not sure of the time frame at this point.

Repeats will be available through phone request at the usual address.

We will be leaving this page on October30th giving some time for this message to filter through.

Thanks to all of you who have responded to our posts over the years thus supporting us in supporting you.

Hopefully one day another platform will arise that is inclusive and encouraging of community and meaningful communication. We shall see 🙏🏼💜

Today’s rain is certainly making the garden sing, and so many flowers are starting to bloom, the roses are budding up, and the bees are pollinating what could be a bumper crop of broad beans.

A new bee swarm arrived on the peach tree and was placed in a new hive, and the light and floral taste of some honeycomb in our existing hive was an unexpected treat.

If someone in your family needs a tooth extraction for any reason, this simple herbal salt remedy will help a rapid and clean healing process.

Remove the petals from two or three Calendula flowers and gently simmer them in two cups of water for about 25 minutes.
The water will go a slight golden colour, strain the petals and set the golden water aside.
Then add to the water 1 heaped teaspoon of Celtic or Himalayan Salt and stir to dissolve.

Wait at least 12 hours after the extraction before gently rinsing your mouth with the herbal salt water.

Do this at least three times a day over the next three to five days.

This herbal salt remedy can be used to cleanse any minor wound or scrape in a refreshing way to help prevent infection and allow a naturally rapid healing process.

Using simple herbal home remedies saves a trip down the street and means health professionals can get on with more challenging problems.

Nothing like having medicine in your own garden.

While working in the garden today I made the mistake of brushing some hair from my face whilst wearing my combination of synthetic and rubber gardening gloves. The result ?
An unbelievably itchy red face and nose. Hmmm

Removing the gloves, washing my hands and face, then taking a homeopathic that usually serves me well settled everything down.

But it sent my train of thought into the past. I used to be a very allergic person, seasonal hay fever was a massive problem in my late teens and early twenties, black wattle, pampas grass, freshly mown grass and countless other things including Ice-cream and cheese would set me off.
At the time I had difficulty in accepting the food side and blamed the external factors.
There were other inflammatory signs in my body as well, regular headaches, recurrent infections in the winter, chronic right shoulder pain, and PCOS leading to a gynaecologist wanting to remove an o***y when I was only 20, and this is just a bit of what was going on for me. Most people didn’t realise how sick I was as I was always a brave face person.

Too much information? Just bear with me.

On reflection I realised that over the course of approximately 7 years that I lived on analgesics most days, antibiotics most of the winter and antihistamines from spring through summer and at other random times as well.

The antihistamines at the time were so strong that more than a quarter of a tablet would put me to sleep, I eventually became allergic to the antibiotics and when I had my GP tell me my problems were all in my head I thought there has to be a better way.

And so it was after one Christmas when I was crying again during the night from pain, my face and eyes were swollen from food intolerances, my energy levels were on the floor and I felt I just couldn’t face anything much anymore, I went and saw a naturopath.

He changed my life!

He helped me to look inward and to trust my inner guidance, helped me to understand the relationship my body had with certain foods, the deficiencies that these intolerances created, how I had eaten enough of that inflammation causing substance sugar to last me the next six lifetimes and so much more.

I went home and cried for a week, no sugar, no cheese, no ice cream, how could I possibly live ?

But I did and I felt better, much better, my energy increased, my pain reduced, my optimism returned and slowly my health issues resolved and there was no need for any of the pharmaceuticals that yes had given me relief, but no were not dealing with the underlying issues, and in fact made me feel as if I was only surviving but certainly not thriving.

This understandably opened my eyes to another world, a more traditional world where the knowledge of so many herbalists, homeopaths and the more recent nutritional approach became my life.
The highlight was when I studied Ayurveda medicine at the Adv Dip level here in Australia which is really just the tip of what Ayurveda can offer, but this is the oldest living medicine still in existence today and so intelligent in helping us live accordingly to our individual needs, although traditional Chinese medicine could be argued to be the same.

So how is my health today? Always a work in process and progress.
Very easily I can get out of balance, usually because I have pushed myself too hard trying to complete all that is required of me by family, clients and my own interests which are many.

No I still don’t eat cheese or ice cream and a lot of other foods, especially those containing additives, nature identical flavours, artificial flavours, msg etc, as I have found my sensitivity has never left me, yet I am fine if I honour my dietary and lifestyle needs.

Will I live a day longer than my allotted time? Probably not, however the quality of life is what counts for me.
To have lived a life on antihistamines, antibiotics, surgeries and goodness only knows what would have then followed, would not have been tolerable.

I have so much gratitude for the naturopath who challenged me and helped me come back to myself, and to the intelligent healing ability of nature, herbs, homeopathy and clean foods, and the countless other teachers I have learned from along the way.

It’s not easy being a sensitive person in a chemical world and yet so many of our clients understand this perfectly as so many of their stories echo mine.

As for the garden gloves……out they go and I am going back to bare hands or leather ones.

If you got this far, thanks for listening and I hope in some small way you found it helpful.

Violets are another winter flower that gives such a delicate scent in our home with just a hint of days gone by. Probably as my Grandfather used to always give my Grandmother a posy for her birthday.

Today these flowers are being made into a Violet cordial, to use in drinks in the summer or even in icing for a cake.

Traditionally the leaves have been used in herbal medicine for a sore throat, coughs and associated colds. Just pick a few and gently simmer in water along with a sliced lemon a little grated ginger and sweeten with honey when cool enough to drink.

These flowers have been separated from the stems, and are steeping in hot water overnight. Tomorrow straining off the liquid then adding some sugar and bringing to a simmer to dissolve the sugar before adding a little lemon juice.
I always add much less sugar than any recipe suggests, usually going by my own sence of taste.
Then store in the fridge.

The other thing we were inspired by today was a post we read regarding Turkish people eating the leaves of the globe artichoke plant, using only the fleshy stem of the leaves after peeling all the stringy part off.

Wonderful, we decided to add about 10inches of thick leaf stem to a lamb shank casserole Gregory had requested for lunch. Delicious!

I thought the dish may have a more bitter taste but no, it really was delicious.

Globe artichoke is still used in herbal medicine very successfully today for cholesterol and bile flow problems.

I think we have about 10 globe artichoke plants growing in the garden as they happily self seed, and it’s great to know we can use more of the plant in everyday life. 🌟

More people are interested in wild foraging these days, but sometimes you need look no further than your own back yard.

Onion w**d or three cornered leeks are flowering just now, and they are a great alternative to spring onions. We use them chopped finely into mashed potatoes, omelettes, stir fry, anything really that you would use onions in.

I found this terrific blog that goes into more detail. 👇🏼

After watching a segment on Gardening Australia many months ago, we have been saving our eggshells to cook quickly in the oven at very high temp and then grind up to add calcium to the soil in the garden.

It’s a lovely sunny day here today and everything is showing Spring growth. Wonderful!

We are choosing to close for this period of time while our community is grappling with the current situation.
There are still some Chiros, Osteos and TCM practitioners open limited hours for urgent cases, please seek them out if you are in pain and in urgent need.

We will use this time to complete some projects at home, spend time in meditation, breathe work, yogic practices and as always gardening and cooking.

Sending strength and compassion in encouraging you to connect with your resourceful self. 🌟

This year we are trying the dehydration method of storing our harvested turmeric.

Four trays of finely sliced turmeric dehydrated, resulted in filling one medium sized jar. Tricky as you start off with so much and end up with so little, but the upside is the jar takes up less storage space.

We have turmeric daily in our diet and you don’t need much, 1/4 to 1/2 a teaspoon depending on what you are making. Being an anti inflammatory it’s the small daily consumption that gives the best results rather than huge doses occasionally when you are in an inflamed state.

Large doses of turmeric can cause gut pain, gastric burning and irritability.
Kitchen herbs are medicines and used appropriately and regularly they help to keep you balanced beautifully.

We still have plenty of fresh turmeric to use grated into many of the savoury dishes we cook, and once that runs out we will start on the dried.

In the meantime we have refilled our big black pots with a mixture of soils and compost and replanted four of the young turmeric fingers in each for next years crop.

As long as those pots are warm and well watered in summer, then the turmeric happily do their thing.

❤️

It’s been a productive weekend in the garden, soaking up the delicious warmth of the sun, and as always marvelling in absolute delight at the new growth bursting forth.

All the natives are flowering early this year and the honeyeaters and bees are busy and happy.

Our lunch today was all veggies from our garden, pumpkin, snap peas, onion, garlic, celery, turmeric, coriander and lemon, made into a curry with rice cooked in ghee with cumin seeds.

Whilst having lunch I went through all the seeds I have collected, purchased and been gifted, planning the next plantings and which beds to prepare.

Gregory is in the process of building a combined potting shed and glass house, predominantly from recycled materials from the old house we slowly demolished and situated on an old slab from one of the many sheds we pulled down. The many benefits will likely become apparent next winter and beyond.

The broad beans which I sowed a little late this year are coming along nicely, as is the garlic, cauliflower, leeks, silverbeet, celery, rocket is flowering, loads of coriander, carrots, snap peas, red cabbage and of course all the citrus.

A lot of the beneficial bee and insect flowers are emerging, Queen Anne’s Lace, Poppies, Borage is flowering, Calendulas and more. I just can’t keep up with where to look at this time of year. 🌟

I hope you have had the chance to develop a productive patch at your place during the last 18 months, enjoying the fresh, tasty and nutritious bounty, which is so satisfying to pick and prepare as you need it. Yum!
