‘Myo/Mys’ is a Latin word for muscle and therapy stands for treatment. Therefore Myotherapy is predominately the treatment of muscle/s that for a variety of reasons have become dysfunctional in some way. When muscles and soft tissue such as tendons and ligaments are not functioning correctly, they have the potential to cause pain and restriction and if left untreated to affect other systems of the
body. Most commonly these include the skeletal system e.g your spine, hips etc…. and/or the nervous system often with symptoms of pins and needles and/or numbness. Myotherapy can be most closely likened to remedial massage in that we utilise a very hands on approach when trying to affect a muscle change. However we also use a variety of other modalities to achieve our aim of returning the soft tissue to a healthy resting state. A Myotherapist will firstly assess the area of pain by asking questions about your general health, relevant physical history, the pain, how long it has been present etc… and test the flexibility of joints and how they are functioning. After the initial information is noted down, you may be required to perform a series of practical movements, eg moving your arm in various ways, resisting pressure from the therapist, turning neck from side to side etc… Physical treatment may then involve using deep tissue massage, stretching, cupping, dry needling, prescription of strengthening program, suggestions for changing work stations etc…. Common problems that respond to Myotherapy include; Sports injuries acute and chronic, lower and middle back pain, neck pain and restriction, headaches and migraines, sciatica, arthritic pain, tennis and golfers elbow, pre and post pregnancy muscular pain, shoulder, hip, knee and ankle pain. We are also aware that Myotherapy is not effective for everyone and regularly refer to Naturopaths, Osteopaths, Chinese medicine practitioners, sports medicine doctors and many other therapists depending on your problem
The duration of the Myotherapy treatment is 45 minutes at a cost of $73 - $92
We also offer 1 Hour Remedial Treatments at a cost of $88
Most private heath insurance companies cover Myotherapy. Some companies, however, are not able to be processed, in this case we ask that you pay for your treatment upfront and obtain a Tax Invoice from reception. This Tax Invoice will have the therapists appropriate provider number for you to claim your rebate directly from your fund. Myotherapy is covered by Workcover provided you have a letter of referral from you doctor and relevant details from your Workcover Insurance Company. We ask that you pay for your treatment upfront where you will obtain a Tax Invoice with the therapists appropriate Workcover number. This will then enable you to send away the receipt to Workcover and receive your rebate for the Myotherapy session. Shepparton Myotherapy has a team of ten qualified Myotherapists and sessions are by appointment only. We offer treatment times as follows; Monday to Thursday: 8:00am – 8:30pm and Friday 8:00am – 4:30pm.
