Not only can shameful/embarrassing memories play on repeat at night and make it difficult for you to go to sleep. Not being able to sleep, also prevents the brain from flushing such memories out of your system.

Dreams, once thought to occur only during REM sleep, also occur (but to a lesser extent) in non-REM sleep phases. Narcolepsy is a neurological sleep disorder that is characterised by an overwhelming daytime sleepiness, even after the person has had adequate night-time sleep.

A narcoleptic may without warning suddenly be overcome by sleepiness and fall asleep, regardless of what situation they are in, and regardless of what activity they are involved in at the time. They may fall asleep in the middle of a conversation, or while waiting for the traffic lights to turn green.

Some narcoleptics also experience what is called cataplexy, which is a muscular weakness that can range from a barely noticeable slackening of facial muscles to a total collapse of the whole body. This may in some cases be brought on by strong emotions, so that the person e.g. in the middle of a burst of laughter suddenly goes limp and collapses.

Narcolepsy is treated with pharmacological medications. The Relax-the-Mind-to-Sleep program will be of no help, unfortunately.

Restless Legs Syndrome is a sleep disorder characterised by uncomfortable sensations, which lead to an almost irresistible urge to move the leg (or other affected body parts).

The sensations are often difficult to describe, but may be like tingling, burning, or tickling inside of the leg. The symptoms of Restless Legs Syndrome are usually worse in the evening, which is why they tend to interfere with falling asleep.

Exercise, stretching, or massage may have beneficial effects for some people, while others require pharmacological treatments. In some cases psychological interventions based on mindfulness practices may provide relief.

Sixty thousand hours! If we think about dreaming as a place we visit and spend time in, that would be equal to spending a total of about 3,650 days in this place.

Ten whole years of experiences in dream-land. And yet, we pay almost no attention to this place and what happens to us there!
