Our story begins at the North Rocks Central School for Blind and Deafblind Children.
In 1978, we were established by a group of parents and teachers who wanted to ensure that their children had a pathway to independent living as young adults and beyond.
We were the world’s first public-education and parent-run organisation with the aim of providing supported accommodation for people who are blind or deafblind. Former students from the school were the first co-residents of our very first home, which opened in Ashfield in 1983 as Australia’s first family group home.
Today, our mission has expanded to include people with a range of sensory impairments. We now support a growing number of clients in our homes throughout Greater Sydney and Wollongong.
And forty years on, the key commitment of those parents and teachers remains – putting people and their quality of life at the heart of all that we do. It’s how we look to the future and what shapes our progressive pathway.
