Metabolic Testing - Champion Health

Metabolic Testing - Champion Health We utilize metabolic monitors for indirect calorimetry, in order to find accurate data on your metab This is known as the Basal Metabolic Rate or BMR.

The Technology we use is the is Metabolic Monitor made by Cosmed. Currently the only machine available in Australia for commercial use. This machine is able to accurately measure temperature changes in clients' breathing, and calculating the number of Kilocalories used per day. The BMR measurement is essentially the number of calories your body uses while at rest. This is a notoriously difficult n

umber to identify accurately, but our metabolic monitor is able to detect an accurate BRM reading in a very short time.

If a diet has you severely calorie restricting, cutting out entire food groups or you’re just forcing down that 10th salad you hate this week; it ain’t it. 👎

I’m a big believer in diets should be personalised, backed by science about *your* body and still take your individual tastes into account.

Might someone need to cut out gluten due to coeliac disease? Sure.
Might someone need to manage carbohydrates if they have Diabetes? Absolutely.
Should you be cutting things out without a medical/ethical/religious reason? Definitely not (unless you hate the taste!)

Break free of the diet culture, get a personalised plan, take the guesswork out of your goals!

Scan Protocol - all that you need to know!

We love our metabolic scanning machine, however in order to make it as ACCURATE as possible, we have a few things we need from you prior to the scan...

1. Fasted (no food) for at least 5 hours prior 🤐
2. No Alcohol or Smoking for at least 2 hours prior 🚭️
3. No Coffee for at least 3 hours prior ☕️
4. No Intense Exercise for at least 14 hours prior 🏃‍♀️
5. No Moderated Exercise for at least 2 hours prior 🚶‍♀️

Phew! I know it seems like a lot, but to get the most accurate results we need you in as RESTED state as possible for the scan. All of the above can affect your rested state. 😴

Any questions? Hit us up!

04/01/2023

Ok put down the pitchforks and let me clarify 😅

DEXA scans are a great way to measure body composition. InBody Scans (when all variables have been accounted for; time of day, fasted, rested, euhydration) can be a great way to see if your body composition is changing. Neither of these are good measures of your resting metabolic rate.

Why? Because that’s not what they’re measuring. The only way we expel calories is through our breath. The only way to measure this (outside a lab) is to measure rested breathing for a set period of time and use indirect calorimetry to calculate your resting metabolism.

Did I nerd out too much? 🤓 Probably. Let’s make this a little simpler. Anything that measures body composition is only going to be able to *estimate* your resting metabolism. We actually measure it. Our machine can’t tell you anything about your body composition, it’s not designed for that. It’s designed for the sole purpose of measuring your metabolism.

Take the guess work out of your goals. Book a scan.

“I’ve heard sugar is really bad, are Artificial Sweeteners healthier?”

This Frequently Asked Friday we’re tackling artificial sweeteners!

We all know that too much sugar is linked to lots & lots of health problems like obesity and tooth decay.

‘Natural Sweeteners’ like honey and syrup are seen as healthier alternatives but in reality they are just sugars in a different form.
On the other hand Artificial Sweeteners like Sorbitol, Stevia and Xylitol often have far fewer calories and are not as damaging to our teeth.

Plus they can give those suffering from diabetes a sweet taste but without affecting their blood glucose level.

The Verdict:
For the purposes of weight loss, artificial sweeteners can be a helpful edition to our diets to reduce dependence on sugars. However you ultimately want to reduce the amount of sweetness you consume.

Where we take one of the web's most asked questions on nutrition and tell you the CORRECT answer. No Bu****it!

First up: Is coffee bad for you? ☕☕☕

It’s a common assumption that coffee is bad because it contains caffeine. However it actually has plenty of health benefits.

The Good 👍:
👉 It’s got plenty of antioxidants
👉 There is evidence it helps protect your brain from Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s
👉 It’s magnesium and potassium content can help regulate blood sugar and assist in weight loss.
👉 Caffeine stimulates the neurotransmitters, helping to fight depression.

The Bad 👎:
👉 It’s easy to drink too much
👉 Can cause insomnia and anxiety
👉 It's a diuretic that can irritate the stomach

The Verdict:
Anything up to 4 or 5 cups of coffee a day is perfectly healthy, however its best to avoid it if you experience extreme anxiety, insomnia or are pregnant.

P.S. don't have too much sugar in your coffee. 😂

Dietitian V.S. Nutritionist, what’s the difference? 🤷‍♀️

What is a Dietitian?
Dietitians or Accredited Practising Dietitians (APD’s), are qualified industry experts in the fields of dietetics, nutrition and sport science. In order to be a one you are required to have a bachelor's degree and have completed over a year of supervised work in the industry. 🎓

Much greater expectations are placed on dietitians as they are required to keep their knowledge base accurate by regularly reading the latest scientific research.

What is a Nutritionist?
Nutritionists can offer a similar service to APD’s but lack the accreditation standards and education requirements. Many nutritionists have studied courses to increase their knowledge but it is often a mix of good and bad info.

Assisting people achieve their nutrition and health goals is a noble and often challenging task. Any who choose to pursue it should be commended for their work. 👏👏👏

Let’s define some Nutrition Acronyms!!! 😊

RMR - Resting Metabolic Rate
This is simply the total number of calories your body burns when it’s completely resting. i.e. Lying in bed doing nothing. 😴

BMI - Body Mass Index
A value derived from body mass divided by your height squared. This is a common indicator used to determine healthy weight levels, but it can be a flawed metric.

kcal - Kilocalorie
the measure of energy we most often refer to as a “calorie”
