Today I was walking Ziggy and noticed a little tomato plant that had somehow sprouted in a gutter. Not exactly the place you’d expect something like that to grow, but there it was, doing its thing anyway.
Less than 100 metres down the road, I noticed another plant. This one had taken root in a crack in the concrete. It must have survived there for a while too, but now it was completely dead.
It got me thinking about how life will always try to find a way. Even in sub-optimal conditions, growth can happen... for a while...
But eventually, those conditions matter.
That plant didn’t fail because it wasn’t resilient enough. It failed because resilience has limits.
And the same is true for us.
Our bodies are incredibly adaptable. We can turn junk food, lollies, soft drink and alcohol into energy. We can sit all day, never exercise, and still feel okay for a time. But eventually the cracks show. Weight gain. Diabetes. Heart disease. Pain. Stiffness. Arthritis. Not because the body is weak, but because it has been compensating for too long.
Resilience keeps us going. Support allows us to keep thriving.
If you’ve been meaning to look into something and keep putting it off, this is probably your reminder.
