Without treatment, children may struggle to eat, speak, or attend school. At Operation Smile Australia, we believe every child deserves access to safe, life-changing surgical care. For just $300, a single cleft surgery can give a child the chance to eat, speak, smile, and thrive. Our volunteer medical teams from Australia and New Zealand work alongside local hospitals, train healthcare professionals, and provide essential equipment—creating lasting, sustainable change. Because every child deserves the chance to smile with confidence.

Kyla travelled more than 12 hours from her fishing community in Masbate Province, Manila to access craniofacial care.

Through the generosity of our supporters, 12-year-old Kyla received surgery—an important step in her ongoing care and recovery. She is now breathing more easily and enjoying more restful sleep.

Her family is deeply grateful for the surgery, viewing it as a hopeful step toward a bright and healthy future.

“To the donors and supporters, we are indebted to you. We hope you can help more kids like Kyla” – Kyla’s Mum, Nanay

Our medical volunteers see the life changing impact of our work up close.

Volunteer nurse Lynn Shands reflects on her experience from our recent Belgaum program in India:

“I always find that walking into the ward the next day and seeing all the post-op patients sitting up, dressed, and smiling is a truly fantastic and rewarding experience. They are so grateful and happy, and I always come away feeling humble and fortunate to have been part of this.

The impact of this work is best seen through the gratitude of the patients and how life changing this operation is. These patients are loved but are often isolated and bullied because of their conditions. We give them an opportunity in life to achieve their potential.”

Our India program has wrapped up! Four amazing volunteers from across Australia joined an incredible international team to help 54 children receive life-changing cleft surgery.

In November last year, 11-month-old John travelled eight hours from Sitio Quarry to our Manila program to fix a rare growth on his nose.

Without surgery, children with this condition can be misunderstood and excluded — missing out on school, friendships and belonging.

Since then, his quality of life has improved, allowing him to sleep peacefully and play like other children his age.

His mother, Chona, says she “couldn’t be happier with the outcome”. Seeing the change in her son has brought relief and joy to the whole family.

Aussies in India 🇦🇺 🇮🇳

Our volunteers are currently on the ground as part of an international cleft program, working alongside an international and local team to provide life-changing surgery and care for children with cleft conditions.

One special moment from the program — a young patient receiving a handmade blanket and teddy, lovingly made by our incredible supporters back home. A small gift, but one that brings comfort and a reminder that so many people are cheering them on. 🧸💙

We’re so proud of our volunteers and grateful to the supporters who help make moments like this possible.

Born with a cleft palate, Abril first came to Operation Smile when she was 16 years old. There were no surgical spots available at the time—but one week later, she received a life changing call.

This January, Abril returned to our Mexico program as a volunteer. She welcomed families, helped complete forms and organised medical records. By drawing on her own patient experience, she also helped children feel calm and cared for.

Now studying nursing, Abril hopes to return to our program as a medical professional one day soon. Her advice to young girls interested in medicine is simple: “Do it.” She believes everyone can use their skills to strengthen their communities.

This International Women’s Day, OSA would like to thank all the wonderful women who make our work possible.

Through mentorship, training, and the sharing of skills, our medical professionals volunteer their time to work hand in hand with global health teams to deliver safe, life‑changing surgery to children around the world.

Our impact continues long after each program concludes, building greater surgical capacity, reducing inequity, supporting families and creating hopeful futures.

To all our women donors, medical professionals, partners, health workers and mentors: we could not change lives without you.

Thank you for helping transform the livelihoods of children— and for helping communities thrive.
