As the season of Advent begins, we light the first candle as a symbol of Hope.
At Mater, hope shines through the courage of every patient, the dedication of every staff member, and the generosity of every supporter.

This Christmas, we reflect on the hope that unites us — the hope for healing, for compassion, and for a brighter future.

It was 18 years ago that Jess faced the toughest challenge of her life.

Carrying high-risk monochorionic diamniotic (MCDA) twins was further complicated when Jess suffered preeclampsia.

She gave birth to premature twins, William and Jacob, at just 34 weeks’ gestation.

Now a senior sonographer at Mater, Jess uses her experience to support other vulnerable mums and babies.

"It’s more than just medical care—it's about making patients feel safe and supported,” she said.

This week, as her twins turn 18, Jess reflects on her journey and the joy of seeing her boys thrive. A beautiful reminder of hope for families with premature babies. 🌟

Yesterday marked a significant milestone for Mater Private Hospital Townsville: our brand-new renal unit opened on our Pimlico campus! 💙

This unit expands our dialysis capacity from eight to 12 chairs and brings more of Mater’s services to one centralised campus.

This is the first stage of our renal, emergency and maternity project, with a further four fast-track emergency treatment bays expected to come online in the next month.
Mater Mothers’ Private Townsville will move to our Pimlico campus from February 2026.

At 72, grandmother Rita was diagnosed with stage 2 lung cancer—a shock, as she’s never smoked. After two years of unexplained symptoms, she finally got an answer and is adjusting to life after surgery and chemotherapy.

Lung cancer affects non-smokers too, with 20 per cent of people diagnosed with the disease having never smoked.

Early detection is crucial.

November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month. Let's raise awareness and encourage early screenings, especially for those at higher risk.

Our Story

Mater is guided by the spirit of the Sisters of Mercy who first established Mater in 1906 when they built the first Mater Private Hospital. This was the start of a tradition of care and compassion for the sick and needy that continues to inspire us today.

Mater Group was formed in 2016 by aligning Mater Health, Mater Education, Mater Research and Mater Foundation under a single, unified banner. It has enabled us to combine our services and skills across Mater's ministries to deliver innovative solutions and take new opportunities as we adapt to the changing needs of our community. An entirely privately owned and operated charitable company, Mater remains committed to its Mission and reinvests any revenue from the business back into the provision of health services for the community.
