Mater Hospital Springfield’s new emergency department is on track to see more than 600 patients in its first week. 🚑

The emergency department and paediatrics unit opened on Monday morning, completing the 186-bed facility’s six-week phased opening.

“It’s a milestone for Springfield and Mater and I’m so proud of the outstanding clinical teams who are delivering these vital services,” said General Manager Suzanne Hawksley.

Springfield resident and retired nurse Eteva Andrews, 84, arrived just 15 minutes after the department opened after suffering a severe attack of gout.

“The staff here have been so good and they all have big smiles – I love these guys!” Ms Andrews said.

For 40 years, Clinical Nurse Catherine Chamberlain has been a familiar and comforting face at Mater Private Hospital Mackay 💙

Catherine began her journey with Mater in 1981, returned in 1986 after time with her family, and for the past 30 years has provided care, comfort and dignity to palliative patients and their loved ones in their final days.

“I always thought I would be a surgical nurse, but there was a gap in the palliative ward about 30 years ago. I offered to help for a week or two — and I’m still here.”

“I’m here for the people. When you walk into a room and the patient or family say, ‘You’re here,’ and you instantly see relief on their face — that’s what I do it for.”

Mater specialists are using artificial intelligence to improve detection rates of potentially cancerous growths in the fight against bowel cancer, which claims around 5,000 lives a year.

Mater specialist gastroenterologist Sylvia Vigh said 99 per cent of cases can be treated successfully if detected early.

“Artificial intelligence has been incorporated into our colonoscopy software at Mater and it helps in surveillance for polyps whilst colonoscopies are being conducted in real time,” Dr Vigh said.

Brisbane bowel cancer survivor Kathryn Dawes, 57, also recommends doing the free home testing kits.

“I received the first test in the mail when I turned 50 and I had three in the cupboard,” Ms Dawes said.

“I thought ‘I’m not going to send a stool sample away’, because you think it’s never going to happen to you.”

June is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about the threat posed by the disease and highlight improvements in treatment.
