"I got to see what it was like in a hospital," he said. "To think that you can be a part of someone's recovery - someone's life - is amazing, even for that small moment."

Having recently graduated with a Diploma of Nursing with Mater Education, Chris is now working as an enrolled nurse at St Vincent's Private Hospital Brisbane! 😍

Who knew waste reduction could be so stylish?

Mater Private Hospital Mackay has come up with a “tote-ally” awesome way to recycle hundreds of kilograms of surgical equipment packaging into reuseable tote bags for hospital patients!

The colourful eco-friendly bags are designed and sewn by hospital volunteers and made from fabric used to keep surgical instruments sterile.

Meet superstar fundraiser Stephen Doblo 👋🚴

The 56-year-old father-of-five signed up for last year's 100km Brisbane to Gold Coast Cycle for Cancer to challenge himself, and to support cancer research and services.

"Most people have been touched by cancer and lost friends and family to the disease, and that’s why I’m so passionate about raising money for research,” said Mr Doblo.

This year Mr Doblo and his growing squad of a dozen Rocky cyclists – Team Titan – are hoping to raise around $100,000.

Mr Doblo will join up to 5000 other cyclists as they challenge themselves to conquer 100km in a day, from Brisbane to the Gold Coast, on 12 October.

There are still spots available for cyclists who want to take part in the 2025 Brisbane to Gold Coast Cycle for Cancer. Go to b2gc.com.au to register.

🎓 Celebrating our future health heroes! 🩺🌟

21 passionate Year 12 students from Rockhampton, Yeppoon, and Mount Morgan recently came together at Mater Private Hospital Rockhampton for an inspiring two-day immersion into the world of healthcare.

From suturing and plastering to psychology, physiotherapy, and maternity care, these students explored a wide range of clinical experiences through the Health Heroes Program — a collaboration between JCU: James Cook University, Australia James Cook University (JCU) and Mater designed to ignite careers in health.

Each student left with new skills, deeper insights, and a certificate marking their graduation from the program — but more importantly, they left with a clearer vision of their future in healthcare.

👏 A huge thank you to our educators, clinicians, and ambassadors who made this experience unforgettable.

Meet Townsville's centennial woman! 🏅

Gladys Marnock celebrated a very special milestone last week, reaching 100 years old while at Mater Private Hospital Townsville on Tuesday.

After a recent fall resulting in a fractured elbow, Gladys was being cared for by staff in Townsville's medical ward and Geriatrician Dr Ragu Kathiresu.

Gladys celebrated with a lunch at the Townsville RSL with the local branch of the War Widows Association, before celebrating with cake and visits by a range of local staff and patients in her room.

Her advice to others looking to make it to 100? “Mind your own business and keep out of trouble.”

Happy birthday, Gladys! 🎈

Our Story

Mater is guided by the spirit of the Sisters of Mercy who first established Mater in 1906 when they built the first Mater Private Hospital. This was the start of a tradition of care and compassion for the sick and needy that continues to inspire us today.

Mater Group was formed in 2016 by aligning Mater Health, Mater Education, Mater Research and Mater Foundation under a single, unified banner. It has enabled us to combine our services and skills across Mater's ministries to deliver innovative solutions and take new opportunities as we adapt to the changing needs of our community. An entirely privately owned and operated charitable company, Mater remains committed to its Mission and reinvests any revenue from the business back into the provision of health services for the community.
