South Brisbane Day Hospital

South Brisbane Day Hospital In 2024 we relocated to our new location at Woolloongabba. The South Bank Day Hospital has a strong commitment to teaching and research.

The South Brisbane Day Hospital (formerly the South Bank Day Hospital) opened in 2014 due to the generous support from the Sylvia and Charles Viertel Charitable Foundation. While most of the procedures at the hospital are eye related and performed by our own ophthalmologists, the facilities are also utilised by other specialists including MOHS surgeons and maxillofacial specialists. You will see hospital staff work closely with clinicians and researchers at the Queensland Eye Institute to help improve clinical care for all patients. Some of the regular procedures performed at the hospital include:

Cataract removal and lens implantation
Penetrating keretoplasty – corneal transplantation
Trabeculectomy – glaucoma surgery
Vitreoretinal surgery
Eyelid surgery (including removal of skin lesions)
Orbital surgery including enucleation
Lacrimal drainage surgery
Refractive surgery
Ocular plastic surgery
Cosmetic eyelid surgery
Squint – strabismus
Yag and Argon laser
Dermatology

The South Bank Day Hospital is licensed with Queensland Health and accredited to ISO: 9001 2008 and NSQHS Standards. These standards ensure that patient safety and risk prevention strategies are in place during your stay. The hospital is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Queensland Eye Institute with all surplus profits going directly into the work of the Foundation.

Today we celebrate World Anaesthetic Day!

On this special day, lets give a big shout out to all the incredible anaesthesiologists and healthcare professionals who work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the comfort and safety during surgeries and medical procedures.

The expertise and dedication of our SBDH staff make a world of difference, allowing us to undergo life-changing surgeries and medical interventions with peace of mind.

Let’s take a moment to appreciate the gift of anaesthesia and the professionals who administer it, making our workday a safer and more pain-free place.

We’re committed to ensuring South Bank Day Hospital is a warm and welcoming place for all patients, staff and visiting clinicians. We want our hospital to be a judgement-free zone, where everyone knows, from the moment they walk through our doors, they’ll be treated with dignity, respect and understanding. At our June training day we did the work, listening to experts from the Queensland Human Rights Commission to understand more about how discrimination looks and feels. We asked questions and talked openly about bias and misunderstanding. There were a few laughs and some penny-dropped moments. Our staff are some of the most caring and compassionate in healthcare. Now they can add well-informed to the check-list.

Recognise us without our scrubs, masks and hair covers? We took a day in June for professional development, getting updates on changes to legislation and the clinical trials program at the Queensland Eye Institute. The agenda included cultural awareness and gender identity and discrimination training.
We started the day with a reminder from Executive Director and CEO Mark Radford that we’re different from most hospitals. We’re a profit-for-purpose health care provider, driven to support the medical research, education and advanced clinical care offered by the Queensland Eye Institute.
Everything we learned related to our mission: 💙 Delivering patient centered health care in a safe, compassionate, and professional environment 💙
We also smashed a few bags of lollies, trays of party pies and an impressive assortment of home-made treats.

It’s International Nurses Day, and the South Bank Day Hospital put on a morning tea to celebrate. We hoped to grab a pic of the Friday nursing team with party pies in hand. But they’re all busy! So we went on a tour of the hospital for some images of our amazing nursing team in action (thanks to the generous patients who agreed to participate).

Nurses at the South Bank Day Hospital in South Brisbane and Lady Bjelke-Petersen Community Hospital in Kingaroy care for patients with professionalism, kindness and respect. Their clinical skills, caring natures and commitment to quality healthcare is on display every day, and often remarked upon by patients.

We salute you, today and every day.
