Centre of Research Excellence in Stillbirth

Centre of Research Excellence in Stillbirth Leading national research, resources & evidence-based advice to prevent stillbirth & improve care.

The Centre of Research Excellence in Stillbirth (Stillbirth CRE) has been established to address the problem of stillbirth in Australia. We are an Australia-wide initiative, our host institution being Mater Research Institute, within The University of Queensland Faculty of Medicine. As a regional office of the International Stillbirth Alliance (ISA), the Stillbirth CRE promotes and facilitates par

tnerships to ensure our work in Australia contributes to the global call to action for stillbirths and also newborn health as outlined Every Newborn Action Plan. Further, the CRE will work towards building a strong health and medical workforce to ensure sustained improvement in care and outcomes for future families.

Two Guides. Shared purpose.

Partnering with Bereaved Parents in Pregnancy and Baby Loss Research is now available for researchers.

This guide sits alongside Getting Involved in Stillbirth Research: A guide for bereaved parents, supporting clearer, safer and more respectful partnership from both sides of the research process.

Both resources have been shaped through Project Engage, with and alongside bereaved parents.

📢 The outcomes of a national priority setting partnership led by Kirstin Tindal, published in BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth, outline renewed stillbirth research priorities in Australia.

Comprehensive consultations identified 25 research questions in six key areas:
1. Determine the causes of, and pathways that lead to stillbirth
2. Identify and implement strategies to prevent stillbirth
3. Build the capacity of health services and systems
4. Understand and improve care for families after perinatal loss
5. Ensure culturally safe and responsive care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families
6. Ensure culturally safe and responsive care for families of migrant and refugee background.

To meet the needs of women and families in Australia to reduce the burden of stillbirth, we recommend that researchers, clinicians, policy makers, and community organisations:
🔹 Allocate resources and funding to implement these priorities
🔹 Actively involve bereaved family members to co-design prioritised research
🔹 Strengthen collaborations to address priorities and reduce research wastage
🔹 Enhance engagement with priority populations to improve pregnancy outcomes
🔹 Evaluate the impact of these priorities over the next five years

We extend our sincere gratitude to all bereaved parents who advised on and participated in this priority setting – these priorities are part of your baby’s legacy.

Today is Say Their Name Day. A day dedicated to speaking the names of babies who are loved, missed, and never forgotten.

At the Stillbirth CRE, we recognise the profound importance of a baby’s name.
Research and lived experience both show that saying a baby’s name can honour their life, validate their family’s grief, and help break the silence that so often surrounds pregnancy and baby loss.

We are grateful to Melissa, our Parent Engagement Coordinator, for sharing her son Leo with us today.

We stand alongside every family who chooses to say their baby’s name – and those who hold their baby quietly in their hearts.

Their names matter. Their stories matter. They remain at the heart of the work we do.

Do you have a ?

We’re proud to support the Cycles for Science Study, which aims to better understand the physical, social and emotional factors that influence whether people feel comfortable taking part in menstrual‑fluid research.

This work helps shape future research approaches – including studies focused on understanding and preventing stillbirth and other adverse pregnancy outcomes.
