In October 2022 Brisbane Colorectal celebrated Dr Chris Gillespie's milestone of 100 robotic colorectal operations at Mater Private Hospital. Dr Gillespie performed the first robotic colorectal operation at Mater Private Hospital in July 2017 and drove the credentialling process for robotic colorectal surgery at the hospital.
Now well established in colorectal surgical practice at Mater Hospital, Chris is on his way towards 200 cases. He describes the robot as another platform for safe, accurate colorectal surgery, particularly when performing pelvic surgery. The added dexterity of "wristed" instruments and the 3D viewing console make the tight confines of the pelvis easier to operate in.
Brisbane Colorectal have kept a detailed audit of robotic colorectal surgery outcomes, and are proud to report excellent results with high patient satisfaction, faster recovery and less pain.

Meet Mater Colorectal surgeons Dr Chris Gillespie and Dr Tim Slack who discuss a new service they have set up at Mater to help improve the quality of life for people suffering with bowel problems.

Dr Gillespie explains how he has developed a multidisciplinary team to treat these conditions with specialist pelvic floor physiotherapists, dietitians, and stomal therapists. They provide specialised pelvic floor testing, endoscopy and colonoscopy, and we also regularly consult with Mater gastroenterologists for their expertise.

To mark World Continence Week 2020, Dr Gillespie did an interview with National Seniors adviser Craig Sullivan. See the link to listen (starts at 7 minutes 30 seconds) - both Dr Slack and Dr Gillespie are experienced specialists in the treatment of faecal incontinence and defecatory difficulties; these are very common disorders. It is predicted that by 2030, over 6 million people in Australia will suffer from incontinence of some sort, and whilst this problem is more common in the elderly it can also affect young people, with a huge impact on quality of life. People often feel ashamed and embarrassed but it is important to seek help! There are more and more treatment options (both surgical and non-surgical) and many patients find a better life with improved control of these common symptoms.

Are you eligible for a Seniors Health Card and don't realise it? We talk about how to find out and more.

Dr Gillespie recently just returned from a trip to Guangzhou, China, where he attended the Chinese “Digestive Diseases Week” and gave a talk on the multidisciplinary management of anorectal pelvic floor disorders, showcasing the Brisbane Academic Functional Colorectal Unit where he and Dr Slack work.
He also attended the International Summit for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Early Colorectal Cancer, where he gave a presentation on the results and progress of the Australian National Bowel Cancer Screening Program. Our National Bowel Cancer Screening Program started in 2006 and has offered all Australians aged 50-74 biennial screening since 2012. People aged 40-49 are also eligible if they request it. Brisbane Colorectal strongly encourages all Australians to participate, as the program has resulted in less colorectal cancer-related mortality since it started - this is probably because of earlier diagnosis in people without symptoms who undergo screening. Bowel cancer is much easier to cure when diagnosed early.
China does not currently have a colorectal cancer screening program but are considering their options.
It was a great opportunity to meet many Chinese colorectal surgeons, to hear of the issues they face in their country with the large population they serve, and to share experiences and new technology.
