Happy Birthday, The Speech Nook!

I feel so fortunate to have been able to build this business over the past 5 years while raising my little family. Meeting other parents, business owners and speechies along the way has been such a joy. My heart is also filled with gratitude for all our wonderful little clients who have come in so enthusiastically for their speech sessions and left a little clearer and more confident.

Celebrating this milestone in Tasmania feels so right. The community here has been incredibly welcoming. Part of that community is the wonderful Cass, from who made some delicious biscuits to share with families this week.

Thank you everyone who has supported The Speech Nook over the past 5 years, both here and interstate. I wish I could pop a bickie in the post for all of you! šŸ’

Found this special edition yesterday and couldn’t resist!

This was the book I used to take my first ever child language sample on prac at uni over 10 years ago. I still use it regularly in sessions for so many goals like sentence structure and treating the ā€˜sh’ sound.

The board-book version is my go-to baby shower gift but I think I’ll stock up on some more of these. My 18 month old loved the gold cover (hence his grubby little finger prints all over it!)

Today, sending extra love to all the therapy mums and mother figures. The mums who already have so much on their plates but still fit in time in their week to bring their child to speech therapy, and often other therapies too. Then we ask you to practise every day at home too. I know it’s a lot. You are doing so so much. The love and commitment you have to your kiddos shines in every single session. Happy Mother’s Day.

Welcome to The Speech Nook

Hello! I’m Kate and I’m the owner and speech pathologist at The Speech Nook. I started The Speech Nook in 2019 after moving into the Springfield area from Canberra. While in Canberra I worked for a large not-for-profit in school, community and clinic settings across the ACT and rural NSW.

I have a one-year old boy and understand the worries we have as parents about whether our child’s development is on track, and motivation we have to do the very best for our little ones. I developed The Speech Nook to be a caring and supportive space for families where we can understand a child’s communication skills best, and work together to get results that have a lasting impact.

It makes my day when a child says something they haven’t been able to say before; whether that is babbling by a baby, ā€˜brmm brmm’ by a toddler pushing a car, a first word, or an entire smooth conversation with a child who stutters.

Outside of speechie life, you will often find me at Robelle Domain with my little boy or at one of the local coffee shops. We also enjoy the Springfield Central Library. I love to travel and languages fascinate me. I have a cat and a dog, and am very proud that my son’s first word was ā€˜cat’. He said this before ā€˜mama’.
