NAOMI BESSIE KRELL 💕

Introducing our beautiful daughter, we are so grateful to be your parents. 👨‍👩‍👧

Born on the 18th November 2022 at 5:40am, weighing 3.34kg and 50cm long, a bundle of perfection that has given us so much joy and love already 🥰

I am thankful to have had an uncomplicated labour with no intervention and am recovering well. A big thank you to for your excellent course last month for an active labour and pain management strategies. Also to the team , in particular Gen and Andrea, for your care during my pregnancy 🙏🏻

An extra big thank you to our amazing medical team, especially Dr Kate Stern and Dr Kym Jansen for helping us in our journey to be parents 🙏🏻

MATERNITY LEAVE 🤰🏻

Today was my last day of work for a little while…at a little over 36 weeks pregnant I’m very happy to have (hopefully) a few weeks to put my feet up and try feel a bit more organised before bump’s arrival. 🐣

Thank you to the wonderful team and Domain Health for the past few months, it was lovely to get to know you all and feel a part of your team. 🙏🏻

This year has been a rollercoaster ride to say the least, and the emotional adjustment from being “Fi the physio” to “Fi the mum” will take some getting used to, but I am so excited for this next “job” and know that I have the most wonderful and supportive “colleague” by my side as we both ride the steep learning curve in our new roles. Love you ❤️

To all my lovely clients thank you for your support this year in particular, and keep an eye out in your emails for some baby spam in the near future! 👶🏻📸

GOODBYE UNION PILATES |

Today is my last day working from the beautiful Union Pilates] in South Melbourne. Sadly it is another wonderful small business that is closing after a challenging few years with COVID.

I feel so grateful to have worked from this stunning space in the heart of South Melbourne over the past two years. A very big thank you to and all the Union Pilates] instructors especially and for your support and encouragement 🫶🏻🙏🏻

FSPP UPDATE |

I’ve been a little quiet on socials recently as there have been some big changes happening in my life that I wanted to be sure about before sharing.

Firstly, I’m sad to say that my time working from is coming to an end, with the studio closing at the end of July. Despite the challenges of COVID the past few years, I’ve loved working from this stunning space and am thankful for the support of and all the UP team. 🙏🏻

I am excited to be starting a locum role and from mid-August, where I’ll not only have the opportunity to be a part of a larger Physiotherapy and Allied Health team again, but also be located close to where I currently practice for clients to continue their care with me.

The other BIG piece of news is that I am pregnant!🤰🏻
Baby is due late November and with all the movement I’m currently feeling I think this little bub is going to be a rowing/swimming/netball/running/generally active little one (or a maybe they are getting ready to star on stage and be a drama kid like their dad??!) 🚣🏻🏊🏻‍♀️🏀🏃🏻‍♀️🎭

I will be taking some time off from the start of November, and will of course keep you updated with baby spam and my plans for returning to work in 2023 when I know more what those plans will look like!

For now I have limited Physio and Pilates appointments available over the next two weeks so please do get in contact if you are in need of an appointment before I finish at Union Pilates on Friday 29th July ❤️

MASTITIS |

Last week I gave a presentation to the wonderful team at Doctors of South Melbourne on the Physiotherapy management for Mastitis, a condition that affects approximately a third of mothers who are breastfeeding their newborn in the first 6 weeks post-birth. 👶🏻

I have summarised my presentation in a new blog on my website. To read more about how to minimise the risk of developing mastitis, and how it is treated if you do develop it, click on the link in my bio ☝🏻

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY
(And a Happy International Pilates Day for yesterday) 🧘🏻‍♀️👩‍👧💕

To all the wonderful mother’s out there, and especially my beautiful, kind, intelligent and inspiring mum, pictured here, wishing you a very happy Mother’s Day!

To all those who have lost their mother’s, who are grieving mother’s having lost their child, who are estranged from their mother or who are trying to become a mother, thinking of you and sending love 💕

Yesterday was International Pilates Day and I am so grateful to have a mum who has always loved exercise and set such a good example with a healthy lifestyle, and has become one of my most diligent Pilates clients over the years…I hope I can be as fit and strong as she is in my 70’s!

SIDE-LYING GLUTES |

I challenge you to find a physio / pilates instructor that doesn’t want to make you work your glutes 😂🍑

Why? As a group of muscles they have such a key role to play in everyday function such as walking and getting up out of a chair, but for many people who spend too much time sitting all day, they are often weaker than they ideally should be. This can put more load through the back, or even contribute to overload issues lower down the leg such as Achilles tendinopathy.

There are many muscles that make up the “glutes”, including the three “larger” muscles of glute maximus, glute medius and glute minimus, as well as deeper hip rotator muscles. Each has their own function and all are important. Side-lying glute exercises primarily target the glute medius, which is an important pelvic stabilising muscle. There are numerous variations to a side-lying glute exercise, including this reformer foot in strap exercise. Being propped up on the elbow also challenges the oblique muscles and shoulder girdle. Although it will often reduce the range you can lift the leg, it really makes that glute burn 🍑🔥

Key watch points are to keep a “soft thigh” (don’t lock your knee) and pelvis stacked (avoid rolling backwards) as this will allow you to compensate and work your hip flexors to lift the leg.

You can try this at home on the mat, and if you have a theraband loop that around your foot and hold the ends at your top hip to mimic the resistance of the strap. And remember to smile even when that glute feels on fire 😀🔥

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY |

Today, March 8th, I celebrate and am thankful for all the wonderful women in my life who provide such a positive influence, whether personally or by the role they have as leaders in the community.

However, we still have a long way to go, both in Australia and around the world, to and create true gender equality today for a sustainable future.

In this photo is my amazing mum, my greatest inspiration to be a strong, independent, bold and passionate woman.

To all the women who set positive examples to the young girls who will be our future I salute you, and to the wonderful men who lift us up and see the women in their lives as their equals I thank you.

I urge you to take some time today to reflect on how you can provide a good example to other women, and ensure you aren’t perpetuating any gender biases consciously or subconsciously

MASKS |

Although masks are no longer required in Victoria in most indoor settings, they are still required in healthcare. As such, I ask that clients continue to wear a well fitted and clean face mask for all Physio and Clinical Pilates appointments & classes (unless you have a medical exemption) 😷

Thank you for helping me to continue to provide an essential allied health service in a COVID-safe environment for all 🙏🏻

HIP PAIN |

Do you get tight hips? Whether from sitting all day at the desk or overworked hip flexors from sport, tightness in the hips can contribute to issues above and below (lower back pain, knee pain etc)🦵🏻🦵🏻

There is a difference though between tight muscles around the hips, and femoroacetabular impingement (FAI), where there is pain and/or functional limitation caused by an excess of bone growth in the “ball and socket” joint of the hip. To read more about FAI click on the link above ⬆️

PILATES CLASSES |

I love teaching Pilates, especially working from the beautiful studio in South Melbourne.

My Clinical Pilates classes are a maximum of 3 clients, meaning you all get a lot of individual attention to detail and feedback on your form. As each client is working on their own program it doesn’t matter whether you’re relatively new to a pilates or have been doing it for years, I will work you at your own pace.

Classes are able to be claimed with Private Health Insurance if you have Physiotherapy cover. The classes run for 1hr and I have early morning, lunchtime and evening classes Monday - Friday.

You can read more about my Pilates classes and availability on my website - link in bio ⬆️ or send me a message.

ABOUT ME |

Hi there 👋🏻 I’ve had a few new followers lately so for those that I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting in person I thought I would share a little bit ‘about me’ 👩🏻

I am an Australian Physiotherapy Association () Titled Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist and an Certified Pilates Instructor. I work within in South Melbourne and treat a variety of Musculoskeletal injuries, Women’s Health concerns and teach Clinical Pilates.

I completed a Masters of Physiotherapy at Curtin University in early 2009, having previously studied a Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science at Monash University. After working in a large hospital in Perth, I returned to Melbourne in 2010 and have been working in private practice since. My belief in Clinical Pilates to improve posture, strength and flexibility has led me to be an educator of APPI Pilates in Australia with since 2012.

In 2015 I completed a Masters of Manual Therapy at the University of Western Australia, which has refined my assessment and diagnosis skills, ensuring a more efficient and effective treatment for clients. This postgraduate qualification has allowed me to become an APA Titled Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist 🎓

In addition to these qualifications, I have completed a number of courses including Dry Needling and Management of sporting hip, groin and knee injuries 🦵🦶

In addition, I have completed an Introduction to Women's Health Physiotherapy course, allowing me to more effectively treat pregnant and post-natal women for a variety of conditions 🤰🏻

Outside of work I enjoy running, swimming, going to the beach and baking cakes for family and friends. I also love to travel and look forward to many more overseas adventures in a post-pandemic world! 🏃🏻‍♀️🏊🏻‍♀️🏖🍰✈️

Thanks for taking the time to get to know me a little, if you would like to know more please feel free to get in contact! 🙋🏻‍♀️🙋🏻
