When a traumatic event occurs, the brain and body store the memory of this traumatic event quite differently from normal memory. This is due to the high level of distressing emotions at the time of the event. These trauma memories are often frozen and stuck in the nervous system which may cause loss of self, numbing, stuckness and immobilisation. When this happens, individuals often find ways to overcompensate this numbness by focusing on external stimulation.
