If you’ve ever walked out of a doctor’s appointment with “your results are fine” and still felt completely not fine, this one’s for you.

Standard thyroid testing looks at a narrow set of markers. And for a lot of people, those markers will sit inside the reference range even when something is clearly off.

That’s not a failure of medicine. It’s a possible limitation of the standard approach.

What we look at is different. We’re asking not just “is this normal?” but “is this optimal for this person, in this body, at this stage of life?”

For thyroid health especially, that distinction matters. Because the symptoms (fatigue, weight changes, brain fog, low mood) don’t wait for your numbers to fall outside the reference range before they show up.

If you’ve been told your thyroid is fine but you don’t feel it, our 1-hour thyroid masterclass may give you some of the answers you’ve been looking for. Simply click the link in our bio to get started.

One of the many things that unite us at Melbourne Functional Medicine, is our collective love of learning. We’re constantly exploring new perspectives on health, diving into emerging research, and challenging our thinking.

Fiona Knaggs is our webmaster, content and SEO (and GEO/AI ninja!) and combines her work with an enduring nutrition curiosity. Here she shares what resonated with her after reading the book The Glucose Revolution by Jessie Inchauspé:

"After reading Glucose Revolution, I genuinely haven’t been able to think about meals and snacking the same way.

Glucose is our body’s main source of energy - but when it spikes, it impacts far more than just energy. We’re talking mood, sleep, skin, weight, immune health, even fertility.

What surprised me most? We rarely talk about glucose unless it’s diabetes-related… yet it affects all of us. We know in Australia, the prevalence of glucose-related issues is increasing every year.

One of the simplest (and most useful) ideas from the book is this: when you make small lifestyle changes to avoid spikes, you flatten your glucose curve, and the flatter your curve, the better.

Jessie shares ten simple “food hacks” that are actually realistic to apply. These habits are now built into how I approach snacking and meals every day, from eating my food in the right order to moving after I eat and choosing dessert over a sweet snack.

They’re small changes, but they’ve completely changed how I approach eating day-to-day."

Thank you for sharing Fiona!

If you've also read the book, we're curious to know, what did you get out of it?

You went to your GP. You got your results. They said everything looks normal.

And yet you're exhausted before the day has even started. You're gaining weight without explanation. Your brain feels like it's running through fog.

So you go back. And you're told, again, that your thyroid is fine.

Here's what we want you to know: "normal" on a standard thyroid panel and optimal thyroid function are not the same thing. And that gap is where so many people get lost.

We built our Thyroid Masterclass for exactly that person.

In one hour, you'll understand what your results actually mean, what's commonly missed, and what to do next.

Your gut isn’t just digesting food. It’s talking to your brain.

New research shows age-related changes in your microbiome can drive low-grade inflammation that disrupts the vagus nerve, reducing hippocampal activity and impairing memory formation.

This edition of the Healthspan Insider also covers:

🧠Why effort amplifies dopamine (and the neurotransmitter doing the heavy lifting)
💤How sleep deprivation triggers your brain’s reset cycles while you’re still awake
🔬The fatty acid compounds that selectively clear “zombie” cells linked to accelerated ageing

Another glowing review from one of our signature healthcare program patients.

Thank you Emilia.

"I have had such a great experience with Melbourne Functional Medicine program! The ongoing support is like no other and I truly believe in their approach to sourcing the root cause of disease!

I would do this program over again in the future if I needed it no questions asked, no money wasted especially when it comes to health! I had Lorraine as my Naturopath and Carla as my health coach and they were both very lovely and effective as I navigate my MS journey. Can’t thank the team enough!"

You may think that because you’ve got symptoms, that will be enough motivation to make all the changes your practitioner recommends.

And I’m here to tell you, as a seasoned health coach, that often… it’s not.

We can’t rely on pain to fuel our change potential or our endurance for change. Because healing takes time.

One of the most common mistakes people make is thinking,

“I’m so uncomfortable, so fed up, so ready. I’ll do anything.”

And usually, that’s true. For a few weeks. Maybe even a couple of months.

But long-term change needs more than discomfort.

What a health coach helps you understand is where you actually sit in your readiness for change.

Because not everyone is in the same place.

And just having pain or symptoms doesn’t automatically mean you’re ready to change.

If you’re not quite there yet, that’s okay.

A coach’s job isn’t to push you. It’s to help you get ready.

And then, when you are, to support you to make those changes in a way that’s beautiful, practical, and sustainable.

More recognition for 2026!

Awards are not why we do this work, but they're a meaningful signal that the way we care for people, build our team, and deliver outcomes is being noticed.

These awards matter because they reflect the things we hold ourselves accountable to every day. Thoughtful, evidence led care. A genuinely supportive patient experience. Systems that are designed for long term health change, not quick fixes.

Most of all, they belong to our team and the patients who trust us with their health. We are grateful, and quietly proud.

A reflection from Program Graduate Erin on her experience with our signature service:

"I recently completed the program at Melbourne Functional Medicine and had an incredibly positive experience. My practitioner Lorraine and health coach Jess were both outstanding – supportive, knowledgeable, and genuinely committed to helping me get to the root cause of my health concerns.

The depth of care, the holistic approach, and the way Lorraine and Jess guided me step-by-step made all the difference. I’m so grateful to the Melbourne Functional Medicine team for helping me restore my health. I can’t recommend them highly enough!"

As a health optimiser, what are the key differences between functional testing and conventional testing (eg what you might get from your GP]

In functional medicine, lab testing is more than a diagnostic tool – it’s the foundation for tailoring effective, individualised health protocols. Key distinctions include:

Focus on optimisation: Rather than simply diagnosing disease, functional tests aim to detect subtle imbalances and guide interventions that enhance overall function and wellbeing

Narrower reference ranges: Results are interpreted using narrower, optimal ranges – not just broad “normal” values – to allow for more precise, meaningful insights

Comprehensive analysis: Functional tests often assess multiple biomarkers at once, providing a more holistic understanding of your physiological systems

Personalised insights: Results are analysed in the context of your unique biochemistry, lifestyle, and health goals – including biomarker ratios and patterns – to deliver tailored recommendations

Proactive approach: Functional testing is designed to catch early signs of dysfunction, allowing for preventative strategies before symptoms progress into more serious health issues

How are our practitioners different from a General Practitioner?

While our practitioners are not medical doctors and cannot prescribe medication, they offer a complementary approach to conventional care.

GPs typically focus on diagnosis and prescribing, often within short appointments.

In contrast, our practitioners take a functional medicine approach, spending more time with patients to understand the root causes of health issues, rather than just treating symptoms. Our accredited functional medicine practitioners all have deep expertise in human physiology, systems biology, and biochemistry.

They use a combination of advanced testing (when needed), targeted dietary and lifestyle interventions, and natural therapies like nutritional and herbal supplements.

Their focus is on supporting the body’s systems, such as digestive, hormonal, and immune health, to promote long-term healing. They also consider factors like stress, sleep, and environmental influences that may be affecting your health. Importantly, they often work in collaboration with GPs to ensure your care is safe, coordinated, and combines the best of both conventional and integrative care.

What is functional lab testing?

Functional lab testing gives a deeper, more complete picture of your health – looking at how your body is working as a whole, not just screening for disease. It helps detect subtle imbalances before they become bigger problems, making it a powerful tool for longevity, prevention, and optimisation.

By analysing key biomarkers and using optimal (not just “normal”) ranges, we can uncover opportunities to boost resilience, protect vitality, and guide your next steps with clarity.

Common types of functional testing include:

🧪Functional blood chemistry analysis
🧪Micronutrient testing
🧪Comprehensive hormone testing
🧪Digestive and microbiome analysis
🧪Biological age testing
🧪DNA testing
🧪Methylation testing
🧪Food sensitivity testing
