I made an old man cry yesterday.
He was begging outside Coles and I didnt have any money in my Sunday walk pockets to share with him.
I did however have a magnificent and divine-smelling Daphne bloom that I'd picked from an overhanging fence on my walk.
I had the thought but hesitated for a moment, what if he was annoyed because it wasn't money? Or, what if he rejected it and thought my offering was stupid? Without thinking on it further, I handed it to him and looked in his eyes saying, "here is a beautiful flower freshly picked why dont you smell it?"
He momentarily looked surprised but then followed my suggestion and took a big whiff of the Daphne. Witnessing the look of pleasure and innocent delight on his face was priceless. He was so grateful for my small gift that he had tears in his eyes as he thanked me earnestly for the flower. For that brief moment we shared a meaningful human connection.
Small conscious acts of kindness can make such a difference to somebody elses day and to yours as well.
My heart felt full and light after this exchange and I felt like skipping as I resumed my walk.
