Low stomach acid contributes to a lot of digestive issues, such as pain and discomfort after eating, constipation or delayed elimination, and bloating.

If the digestive system is working inefficiently, then not only do you start to feel very fatigued, but over time nutritional levels can become depleted because nutrients are not assimilated properly.

Our stomach acid is also our first line of defence against pathogens. We need strong stomach acid in order to kill off nasty bacteria or parasites that enter the body. Without it, we leave ourselves open to outside invaders entering the body and wreaking havoc on our digestive system and immune system.

How to increase stomach acid

✨Chew. Most of us don’t chew nearly enough. when we chew, it encourages enzymes to be released in the mouth to start the breakdown of food.

✨Take your time. Don’t rush eating, or eat on the run. When we prepare food, smell it, and allow our body to signal that it’s soon time to eat, then we start to produce the enzymes to break the food down.

✨Drink an apple cider vinegar shot before the meal. Add a tablespoon into a small amount of water and drink 15 minutes before the meal. You can also add it to salad dressings for example. Apple cider vinegar is full of enzymes to help break down food, and it also increases stomach acid.

✨Eat protein last on the plate. This allows time for the digestive system to release more enzymes in order to process the protein component.

✨Eat fermented vegetables and pickles. Fermented foods have a natural ability to boost digestive enzymes through beneficial bacteria that help to digest food.

✨Take digestive bitters. Digestive bitters can be purchased from most health food stores. They are a combination of liquid herbal medicine traditionally used to boost digestive enzymes.

✨Try ginger, HCL, probiotics, zinc (test zinc levels first). Test for which probiotics you need (ie are you low in beneficial bacteria - we can test this).

If you have digestive issues, then schedule a time with us and we’ll help you sort it out 👆

Akkermansia muciniphila's health benefits include metabolic modulation, immune regulation, and gut health protection.

It strengthens your gut’s mucous lining. This helps to make a strong functioning gut, and protects it from damage.

Akkermansia is also a foundational gut species as it helps to feed other beneficial bacteria too.

✨A. muciniphila protects against Metabolic disease

Daily supplementation of A. muciniphila for five weeks has shown body weight, fat mass, glucose tolerance, and insulin sensitvity to be significantly improved in obese subjects. This is really helpful for patients with metabolic diseases such as obesity and type 2 diabetes.

✨A. muciniphila protects against Autoimmunity

Dysbiosis of the intestinal microbiome is related to autoimmune diseases. Having a strong gut reduces endotoxaemia (when endotoxins enter the bloodstream through a damaged gut wall). This is extremely important for a balanced immune response (protecting against autoimmunity). It has shown efficacy in treating autoimmune diseases when orally administered.

✨A. muciniphila protects against Gastrointestinal Disorders

Studies have revealed an inverse relationship between A. muciniphila and intestinal inflammation, such as inflammatory bowel diseases. It was shown to improve the integrity of gut barrier which is a crucial factor in improving health outcomes in gastrointestinal disorders.

✨A. muciniphila protects against Cancer

One study showed that A. muciniphila was especially enriched in cancer patients who responded to PD-1 treatment when compared to non-responders, suggesting that A. muciniphila may enhance anticancer immunotherapy efficacy.

✨✨How to increase Akkermansia muciniphila✨✨

Akkermansia muciniphila loves to eat pomegranate, green tea, rhubarb, grape juice, and cranberry.

Eating prebiotic foods also encourages Akkermansia muciniphila to thrive and multiply. Prebiotic foods are raw potato starch, onions, garlic, leeks, chicory, artichoke, flaxseeds, legumes, asparagus, cooked and cooled potatoes, cooked and cooled rice.

Working with your naturopath, you can determine the best approach for treating your symptoms, and ensure you cover the below four steps.

✨Remove
The first step is to remove the factors that negatively impact the gastrointestinal tract and may be contributing to your symptoms. These triggers may be varied, because there’s often not just one trigger, but can be a few. A great place to start is to run a stool test to determine the mix of bacteria, yeast, and/or parasites in the gut – this takes out all the guesswork. Triggers may not only be pathogens in the gut such as bacteria or yeast/candida, but may also be food sensitivities, medications, sugar/refined carbs, fried/fatty foods, stress, toxic elements and foods that your body finds difficult to digest.

✨Replace
In this step, you and your naturopath can replace all those factors that may be missing or lacking such as insufficient stomach acid or digestive enzymes, low beneficial bacteria, or nutrient deficiencies.

✨Re-inoculate
Your naturopath will help you to re-inoculate your gut with good bacteria by using targeted prebiotics and probiotics in order to regain a healthy balance. Prebiotics help to feed and promote the growth of beneficial bacteria. It’s even better when we find out precisely which types of beneficial bacteria you’re low in so that we can choose a strain-specific probiotic.

✨Repair
It’s important to repair the lining of your gut. Your naturopath may suggest the use of nutraceutical agents to repair the gut lining. There are a number of supplements that can be used to help repair the intestinal tract lining including L-Glutamine, slippery elm, zinc, collagen, mastic gum/gum arabia/acacia, licorice, aloe vera, omega 3s.

Gut health =
Great digestion + assimilation of nutrients + glowing skin, hair, nails + healthy immune response + low inflammation + better sleep + supports a healthy weight + boosts energy + supports a balanced mood + clears brain fog + more!

If you’re ready to start feeling great again, look no further than the gut! Talk to us and test to find out what’s really on the inside! ✨✨✨

Did you know that your body can naturally produce more hyaluronic acid if you adjust your diet?

A healthy balanced diet full of HA-rich foods will certainly help your appearance. If you want to increase the amount of hyaluronic acid in your body, you could start by adding these food groups containing HA to your diet 👇

Bone Broth

Bone broth is an excellent source of nutrients; glutamine, chondroitin, calcium, zinc, potassium, glucosamine, and hyaluronic acid. The combined benefits of hyaluronic acid and these other nutrients work to encourage healthy and supple skin.

Nuts and Seeds

BRAZIL NUTS, CHIA SEED, CASHEW NUTS, ALMONDS, PINE NUTS, PUMPKIN SEEDS

Many nuts and seeds are high in magnesium and therefore promote hyaluronic acid synthesis. For the highest concentration of magnesium and the most skin-boosting benefits, try pine nuts, cashews, brazil nuts, pumpkin seeds, almonds, chia seeds.

Green Leafy Vegetables

SPINACH, KALE, BROCCOLI, BOK CHOY, MICROGREENS

Leafy greens are a strong source of magnesium—which is needed for hyaluronic acid production in the body. These greens encourage supple skin and a bright complexion by elevating moisture levels and promoting hyaluronic acid production.

Soy

TOFU, SOY MILK, SOY YOGHURT, TOFU, TEMPEH, EDAMAME

An increase of oestrogen from phytoestrogen-rich foods, may help production of hyaluronic acid by the body.

Citrus

ORANGES, LEMONS, GRAPEFRUITS

Although citrus fruits don’t contain hyaluronic acid, they do contain naringenin, which inhibits the breakdown of HA in the body

Vitamin C also promotes the synthesis of collagen, another important beauty food.

Root Vegetables

POTATOES, SWEET POTATOES, TURNIPS, CARROTS, JERUSALEM ARTICHOKES, PARSNIP

Root vegetables are great for producing hyaluronic acid in the body. Root vegetables contain potassium, fibre and vitamins A, C, and B6, so they’re highly nutritious good healthy starches that are beneficial for skin health.

Are you tired of dealing with cravings? Did you know that different types of bacteria in your gut feed off different types of food. So if your diet is starch-heavy for example, then you may crave more of those types of foods because you have higher numbers of bacteria that enjoy feeding off them.

Research also suggests that our gut bacteria may generate cravings for foods they specialise in — foods that will allow them to better compete for resources against other bacteria.

So if we have an imbalance in gut bacteria.. ie too much of the nasty stuff, then we can be craving a lot more sweet and starchy foods… because those type of pathogenic bacteria enjoy feeling off those foods.

By determining the mix of bacteria in your gut, we can modify it to a more beneficial mix. Cravings can be reduced by increasing gut microbiota diversity in beneficial strains.

If you’re tired of dealing with cravings the hard way, speak with us and deal with cravings the easy way once and for all 💪

Autoimmunity is an illness or disease that occurs when the body’s tissues are attacked by its own immune system. Autoantibodies stimulate the inflammation cascade causing the body to attack itself. The autoantibodies that target the nucleus of a cell are called antinuclear antibodies (ANA). We all have some ANA’s but in the presence of a large number, it can indicate an autoimmune disease.

There are over 80 autoimmune diseases identified to date.

Diseases linked with ANA:
Rheumatoid arthritis
Lupus
Scleroderma
Sjögren’s syndrome
Polymyositis/dermatomyositis
Mixed connective tissue disease
Hashimoto’s thyroiditis
Autoimmune hepatitis
Inflammatory bowel disease
Juvenile arthritis
Addison’s disease

👉Treatment
In order to treat autoimmunity, the naturopathic approach is to:

✨identify the ‘trigger’ (pathogenic, lifestyle, dietary)
✨improve digestive function
✨balance gut microbiota
✨reduce inflammation
✨modulate the immune system and reduce autoimmune antibodies

If you have an autoimmune activation or any of the autoimmune conditions listed above, schedule a time to talk to your naturopath, who can devise a tailored treatment plan to assist with your symptoms and healing your condition. We can work alongside conventional medicine.

26/09/2022

The health of our gut is immensely important, and we now know the link between gut inflammation, skin inflammation, mood disorders, lowered immunity, and a multitude of other health conditions which are influenced by the state of our gut and the diversity of our microbiota.

Studies show that cultivating diverse and beneficial gut flora is the key to strong immunity, robust digestion, detoxification, balanced moods, balanced hormones, weight loss, and longevity. It is this internal complex ecosystem, our microbiome, which keeps us in good health.

Eating prebiotic foods is a great way to encourage the growth of beneficial bacteria.

Asparagus, onions, garlic, leeks, chicory, artichoke, dandelion, slightly green bananas, oats, apples, cacao, flaxseeds, seaweed, and cooled potatoes help encourage the increase of healthy bacteria in the gut.

p.s don't try to encourage the increase of healthy bacteria in your gut without removing the nasty bacteria in the gut first or at least alongside! If you'd like to take out the guess work in the treatment of your digestive issues, then contact us and we'll talk you through functional testing options. That way, we take out any guess work and can see which type of bacteria we need to eliminate and which strains we need to boost.

Where do you start when wanting to improve gut health?

✨Promote strain diversity.
Greater gut diversity supports gut and overall health and well-being. A wide and diverse range of gut microbes that coexist harmoniously produces thousands of health-supportive metabolites, such as short-chain fatty acids. Different strains of bacteria feed off different food, so ensure diversity in your diet, don’t just eat the same things all the time.

✨Eat fermented foods and take probiotic supplements.
Fermented foods are a natural source of probiotics. Kefir, kombucha, fermented vegetables, sauerkraut, miso, tempeh etc
Also consider a good probiotic, and switch them around reasonably often.

✨Consume prebiotic foods (*if you have gut issues already, some of these foods may worsen symptoms, so treat the underlying gut issue first) asparagus, onions, garlic, leeks, chicory, artichoke etc help to encourage the increase of healthy bacteria in the gut.

✨Find out what's in there.
A great place to start improving gut health is conducting a functional microbiome stool testing analysis to evaluate your microbiome status.

✨Address undesirable organisms. Gut health can quickly become compromised when unwanted and unwelcome microorganisms take up residence. You can have all kinds of digestive symptoms (bloating, reflux, stool fluctuations, pain). Once we know what's inside your gut, we can treat it properly, and it doesn't take long.
