With running we need to remember to aid our performance with recovery.

Rest and recovery is as important as exercise itself. We need to allow the body to recover and adapt appropriately to a new stimulus/load. If we do not do this it can lead to injury or overuse issues.

Recovery has many elements to it. To adequately recover we need to replenish (food and hydration), rest (sleep and relaxation) and recover (water immersion, massage, compression, stretching, foam rolling, active recovery).

Post run within around 30 minutes of finishing a run you should start refuelling to aid in the body's repair and adaptation process. You should aim to be consuming 1.2g of carbohydrate per kilogram of your body weight and up to 0.4g of protein per kilogram. For every kilogram of bodyweight you lose, you should aim to drink one-and-a-half litres of fluid. Try to drink around 500ml in the first 30 minutes after your run and keep gulping every five to 10 minutes until you have reached your target.(Bonilla et al. 2020).

Studies have shown that those who get less than 8 hours. So it is vital that we have good sleep quality and quantity when consistently running to allow the body to repair and adapt.

Additional aids such as massage therapy, cold water immersion, compression garments, stretching and foam rolling, can also be helpful with recovery. The current research has varying levels of evidence around the effectiveness of these aids. With any of these use the tools that make your body and you feel the best. The ultimate aim of recovery is to allow the body to bounce back and be ready for the next run (Milewski et al. 2014).
