At Safflower Clinic, we often get asked ‘How big are the needles?’ and ‘Will it hurt?’
As shown in the above image, acupuncture needles are very fine and are generally made from stainless steel. This makes them flexible and allows us to manipulate them when they are under the skin.
Shorter needles are often used near the face, while longer needles are used on areas of the body that have thicker tissues. The needles are only used once and are disposed of after usage.
The acupuncture needles are inserted very carefully into meridians or acupoints. When they pe*****te the skin, it is not a painful sensation but more of a small prick. Most often though with our skill, you may have little or no awareness of the needles being inserted.
Once the needles are inserted and we begin to work with them, you may feel a little numbness, tingling, heat, or energy around the site of the insertion. You will be aware that the needles, but the sensation is more like slight discomfort than pain.
