Winter is here !!

More freezing cold air wakes us up in the morning, and the trees are shedding all their dark leaves, letting us know that winter is here!

The cold and dark weather makes our bodies fragile from external pathogens. Therefore, we need new strategies to warm the core of the body.

In Chinese Medicine the kidneys are the dominating organs in winter. They are part of the Kidney System. This system is also the root of the body systems which serve to provide warm energy to the rest of the body systems. Therefore, to help warm your body in winter, you need to support your Kidney System.

There are some easy ways that you can provide this support. Try eating salty flavoured food such as bean paste soup and seaweed soup. Sweet or greasy food generates more heat for your body systems, but they may make your body feel more sluggish, so we recommend that you cut down on those foods. Instead, eat foods with warm properties, such as lobster, shrimp, beef, lamb, chive, cabbage etc. If you are prone to feeling cold quite quickly, then try warm spices like ginger, cinnamon, basil, hot pepper, or garlic in your cooking.

The winter cold makes our muscles and joints stiff and less flexible. Please endeavour to stay active and do more gentle stretching as a daily routine.

Finally, if you want to get additional warm energy, acupuncture is great to make your energy flow active, and try moxibustion for warmth and to relax your body. We would be happy to provide you with these treatments and more friendly advice, to help your body stay warm and get you through the chill of winter!

Pain is an unpleasant feeling and emotional experience that can be caused from tissue or nerve damage. It may be described like sharp, dull or stabbing, etc and presented as lower back pain, neck and shoulder, sciatica, headache and so on.
On the other hand, in Chinese medicine it is said that could happen because of;
• Something not flowing in the body
• When a part of the body does not get enough blood or nutrient supply
• When your energy is congested
‘Not flowing’ means congestion or blockage. Every component in the body system has to be flowing or circulating to do its own function. For example, blood circulates within the blood vessels and does its function such as collecting toxin and delivering nutrient and oxygen. If your blood system is not in free flow, and rather congested then make a blockage on the energy pathway. Then it creates pain. The trigger factors that cause the pain can be varied. But in Chinese Medicine it could mainly be wind, cold, damp, phlegm and blood stasis.
Pain could come from insufficiency of blood and nutrients supply. For example, it can happen when you do exercise after a long time, or overexertion
When the energy is congested then it can bring the pain as well. Energy blockage on the meridian system can be from a few different reasons but most commonly in Chinese Medicine quick emotional change (anger or stress) can make the energy flow congested and make you feel uncomfortable with breathing and give you headache etc.
To manage the pain you have, exercises, stretching are very important. And from the Chinese medicine perspective meditation is a good way to control your emotion in order to prevent the energy blockage. Acupuncture is another option to manage your pain as well. Acupuncture is a technique that regulates the energy flow on the meridian system (vital energy pathway). As mentioned ‘something is not flowing or not passing through’ causes the pain in Chinese medicine. Regulating energy and blood circulation via needling into a specific pointe promotes the self-healing system, and it brings more energy and blood flow into the affected area in order to unblock the energy pathway and reduce the pain.

Its time to Boost Your Immune System!!

As the weather changes and days get cooler, supporting your immune system is really important. People with sniffs and sniffles pop up all around you as the cold and flu viruses become more prominent, so it's worth making the effort to avoid getting sick too!

Your immune system is your defense system against all the viruses, bacteria and toxins that could potentially invade and make you sick, so you want it working at its best.

Stress, lack of sleep, overwork, excess alcohol and poor diet are just a few common things that can deplete your immune system, and over time, poor lifestyle habits continue to erode your defences, making you more prone to illness. Autumn is the time to get your house in order, and this means your health and lifestyle too.

Acupuncture and Chinese herbs can help boost immunity by regulating imbalances in your body, and stimulating your body's own chemical systems back into good health (including hormone and neurotransmitters). The anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties of certain herbs can also help to reduce symptoms and shorten the duration of colds if you do get sick. So if you feel like you could use a boost, now’s the time to see your Chinese Medicine Practitioner
Some other important way to boosting your immune system include:
Healthy nutrition. This is crucial. Eat regular meals, with plenty of vegetables for all the fibre and nutrients they provide. Try to cook fresh and natural foods for yourself and “Eat a rainbow” to ensure you’re getting a range of different veggies with a variety of flavours and nutrients.
Sleep is very important. Pay attention to your sleep hygiene and try to develop a regular daily routine! Be mindful to not overwork. Ensure you allow plenty of time to relax, including some screen-free time, for at least half an hour before bed, and ideally head to bed way before 12!
Daily Exercise and meditation. Both are important methods for reducing stress hormones (which in excess are not great for the immune system) and wonderful for mental and physical health. If you don’t know how to meditate, now is a great time to start! There are plenty of meditation apps you can download on your phone that can guide you in short meditations. Find one that you enjoy.
Sunshine and fresh air. Take walks in the sun on all the nice days. There are lots of benefits of getting fresh air and sunlight, and studies have shown it can boost your immunity to viruses too.

Take care of your body and it will take care of you.

Autumn!! Autumn !!
Summer went away, and the nice breeze sweeps in and trees started to wear the beautiful golden colour. In Chinese Medicine human body is a part of the Nature. So human being has to adapt to nature’s changes, and harmonize with the nature then we will be healthy.
While we say Spring is the season that wakes or melts the every creature/ life in nature, and Summer is the season that expands and grows under the sun light which means strong yang energy, Autumn is the season that prepares the harvest and storage from the summer.
In addition to, Autumn falls into Metal and Dryness according to Five Element and 6 Evil Qi and it pertains to Lungs in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Lungs take a role to intermediate between external environment and internal body system.
In Autumn the diurnal range is getting bigger, and the dry-cooler weather makes our lung system to consume extra-energy to maintain the body temperature. Then it can affect our immune system.
Therefore Autumn is the season that we need to ensure our energy keep up !! and that warms our body to prepare the coming winter.
Here are a few tips
• Counter the dryness; avoid raw, cold food, and Keep moisten your lung system with honey, pear etc
• Wind attacks the upper body in TCM; cover your neck and chest with clothes or a scarf
• Try deep breathing and meditating to help yourself to release the gloomy old feeling

Recent research has found that bacteria in the gut can affect people’s mental state, leading to mood, cognition and behavioural problems. But in TCM, the link between the gut and all of the body’s organs has long been recognised.
