Photographs fail to capture the complexity of an individual's pain and distress. The emotional and psychological scars that are not visible in images have a profound impact on daily life, influencing social interactions, personal growth, and career advancement, all of which are not readily apparent from photographic evidence. Some scars money cannot erase.

In Sydney, August 2025, we enjoyed a fantastic Celebrations night with the DMK Australia and New Zealand team. It's always energizing to connect with Daniel Dickson and Debbie Dickson, as well as our colleagues. We loudly cheered on Skin Fairy clinics as they won the DMK Clinic of the Year Award, bringing it back to Western Australia. We look forward to another year of DMK achievements. What if visible skin ageing is just a symptom? Are we overlooking its true biological cause? With

In the evolving landscape of dermatological science, cellular senescence is now recognised as a central mechanism in cutaneous ageing. Senescent cells—arrested in proliferation due to genotoxic stress, telomere attrition, or oxidative damage—accumulate in skin tissue and secrete a range of pro-inflammatory and proteolytic factors known as the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP).

Replicative senescence is caused by telomere shortening after repeated cell divisions. Telomeres are repetitive nucleotide sequences at chromosome ends that protect genomic stability. Each cell division results in telomere attrition, ultimately triggering senescence when critical shortening occurs. Factors such as oxidative stress, UV exposure, and lifestyle choices exacerbate telomere shortening, leading to premature ageing.

This SASP contributes to degradation of the extracellular matrix, impaired dermal regeneration, chronic inflammation, and loss of skin integrity.

Next-generation cosmetic interventions are beginning to incorporate senotherapeutic actives—compounds designed to modulate or eliminate senescent cells and preserve genomic stability:

Senolytics (e.g., quercetin, fisetin): induce apoptosis in senescent cells, reducing SASP burden

Senomorphics (e.g., niacinamide, curcumin): suppress SASP expression and inflammatory signalling without cytotoxicity

Telomere and DNA repair enhancers (e.g., NMN, resveratrol, EGCG): support chromosomal integrity via sirtuin activation and NAD⁺ restoration

These interventions represent a fundamental shift: from treating symptoms of ageing to modulating the underlying cellular processes that drive it.

✨ The future of cosmetic dermatology lies in targeted, molecular interventions that extend cellular healthspan and delay senescence-associated dysfunction.

Deeper Than Beauty

The Sanctuary: Beauty and Wellness Centre opened its doors in Southern River Shopping Centre in May 2008. Starting off with a small cohort of staff offering varied beauty therapy services, it has evolved over the years to specialise in clinical skincare, skin correctives and age management under the careful hand of Lucie Missak. Lucie began her beauty therapy journey decades ago, but attained her ITEC Beauty Specialist Diploma in 2003, which led quickly to her teaching the same specialisation to others at the Perth College of Beauty Therapy. In 2005, she opened the first beauty academy in the Seychelles. In 2008, she returned to Perth and opened the Sanctuary: Beauty and Wellness Centre, which has gone on to become one of the best-loved small businesses in the area.

The Sanctuary: Beauty and Wellness Centre has hosted assorted specialists over the years, but our longest and strongest professional collaboration is with Dr Marko Lambassa, a cosmetic physician who provides injectables on site at the clinic on a by-appointment basis.

Our centre is one of the approved Australian depigmentation clinics for Mesoesthetics, an approved Plasmedic Fibroblast Therapy service provider, and a proud distributor of DMK and Dermalogica products. In recent years, Lucie has retrained in cosmetic tattooing, and now provides 3D embroidery eyebrows and other permanent micropigmentation as part of the Sanctuary: Beauty and Wellness Centre’s age management services. We look forward to delivering you a holistic beauty and wellness experience through high quality product, innovative technique, and excellent service for many years to come!
