🛠️ Supporting Movers & Shakers: Helping Kids Who Crave Sensory Input!

Does your child constantly move, tap, jump, or seek out physical input? Do they struggle to sit still, fidget with everything, or seem like they have an endless supply of energy? These children, often referred to as Movers & Shakers, have a high sensory threshold—they need a lot of movement and input to feel regulated.

Instead of trying to get them to “just sit still,” let’s support them in meeting their sensory needs in a structured, positive way! ✨

✅ Build movement into their routines
✅ Use preferred fidget tools to keep hands busy
✅ Offer deep pressure input
✅ Allow flexible seating options
✅ Encourage structured movement activities

🌟 Making it Individualised 🌟
Not every child will identify fully as a Mover & Shaker, and that’s okay! Some children may seek movement in one sensory system but not in others. For example, a child might love jumping and climbing but feel overwhelmed by loud noises (Super Sensor) or struggle to notice hunger cues (Quiet Observer).

Sensory processing is unique for every child, and their needs may change depending on the environment, time of day, or level of regulation. The key is observing, understanding, and adapting strategies to meet their individual sensory profile so they can feel safe, calm, and engaged in daily life!

🔴 The Mover & Shaker (Sensory Seeker – High Threshold, Active Response)

The Mover & Shaker is constantly on the move! They have a high sensory threshold, meaning they need a lot of sensory input before they register and process it. Because of this, they actively seek out movement, pressure, touch, sound, and other sensory experiences to help their body and brain feel just right.

Sitting still for long periods? Easier said than done! These children thrive when they can engage their body, explore their environment, and receive the sensory input they crave. However, when they don’t get enough movement and stimulation, they may become restless, fidgety, or even disruptive in an attempt to meet their sensory needs.

🔎 Key Takeaway:
Movers & Shakers NEED sensory input to feel regulated. When their need for input isn’t met, they might appear hyperactive, restless, or impulsive. Instead of trying to make them “sit still,” we can channel their energy into safe, structured movement opportunities that allow them to thrive at home and in the classroom!

✨ When we work with their sensory needs instead of against them, they can feel regulated, engaged, and ready to learn! ✨

Welcome to Sensory Squad: Cracking the Code! 🚀
A fun and engaging way to help parents and teachers decode children’s sensory needs using Dunn’s Sensory Processing Model!
Every child experiences the world differently—some are always on the move, while others notice every tiny detail. Some children actively seek out sensory input, while others try to avoid it. Understanding their sensory profile can help us support their regulation, learning, and participation at home and in the classroom.

💡 What is Dunn’s Sensory Processing Model?
Dunn’s model explains that sensory processing is influenced by two key factors:
1️⃣ Neurological Threshold – How much sensory input a child needs before they notice it.
- Low threshold = They notice things easily (e.g., get overwhelmed by loud noises).
- High threshold = They need more input to register it (e.g., don’t notice their name being called).
2️⃣ Self-Regulation Style – How they respond to sensory input.
- Passive responders = They don’t actively try to change their environment (e.g., get overwhelmed but don’t leave).
- Active responders = They seek or avoid sensory input to change their experience.

Using these two factors, children fall into one of four sensory processing patterns:
🔴 The Mover & Shaker (Sensory Seeker) – Needs LOTS of movement and input!
🟡 The Quiet Observer (Low Registration) – Needs STRONGER input to stay engaged.
🟢 The Super Sensor (Sensory Sensitivity) – Notices EVERYTHING and can get overwhelmed.
🔵 The Escape Artist (Sensory Avoider) – Actively AVOIDS too much sensory input.

Each of these Sensory Squad members experiences the world in their own way, and knowing their sensory pattern helps us create supportive strategies to help them feel regulated, safe, and ready to learn!

Stayed tuned to meet the Sensory Squad and crack the sensory code together! 🔍✨

🎒 Back to School & BIG Feelings! 😢😡😴💥

The transition back to school can bring BIG feelings for kids—excitement, nervousness, overwhelm, and exhaustion! After holding it together all day, many children experience after-school meltdowns as they release all that built-up emotion. 😔

💡 Why does this happen?
School requires so much energy—following routines, socialising, processing sensory input, and managing expectations. When kids get home, they finally feel safe to let it all out.

✨ Top Tips for Reducing After-School Meltdowns:
✅ Snack & Hydration First🍎🥤 – Blood sugar crashes can trigger emotional outbursts. A protein-rich snack helps stabilise energy.
✅ Movement Break🏃‍♂️ – Swinging, jumping, or stretching can help regulate emotions.
✅ Quiet Time🧘‍♀️ – Create a calm space for kids to recharge before diving into homework or conversations.
✅ Avoid Questions Right Away❌❓ – Instead of “How was your day?”, try “I’m so happy to see you!” and let them come to you when they’re ready.
✅ Predictable Routines⏳ – A visual schedule or consistent after-school routine provides comfort and security.
✅ Connection Over Correction❤️ – If a meltdown happens, validate their feelings: “It looks like today was a big day. I’m here for you.”

Remember, BIG feelings aren’t bad—they just need support and regulation. 🌈✨

🐾PAWS-ITIVELY IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT🐾

Hiya hoomans! 🐶 Jake here, the newest (and cutest) unofficial team member at Bloom Therapy WA! Mum’s been a bit busy lately… with ME! That’s right, I’ve been keeping her paws full with my favourite occupations:

🛌 Sleeping (it’s an essential occupation, right Mum?)
🏉 Playing footy (future footy star in training!)
🦈 Dressing up as a shark (because who doesn’t love a fintastic outfit?)
👩‍👩‍👦‍👦 Being with Mum and Dad (family time is my favourite therapy).

I’ve got some ruff goals I’m working on too:
🚽 Toilet training (nailing it one patch of grass and puppy pad at a time!)
🦷 Stopping my puppy bites (lucky Mum’s an OT and knows all the tricks to keep me busy!).

I might be small, but I’m learning SO much every day—occupational pup-apy at its finest! 🐾

Do you think Mum should add “Puppy OT” to her services? I think I’m a paw-some success story already! 🐕✨

💡 Supporting Children with Transitions 🌟

Transitions between environments and tasks can be challenging, but with the right strategies, they can become smoother and less stressful. Here are some tips to help your child navigate changes with confidence:

1. Use a Transition Object: A small, comforting item (like a favorite toy) can serve as a tangible link between activities or environments, providing a sense of continuity. 🧸

2. Practice in Reverse: Start by introducing the new environment or task, then move back to the familiar one. This can reduce anxiety by making the new situation feel less abrupt. 🔄

3. Create a Transition Playlist: Develop a playlist of calming or upbeat songs that can signal upcoming changes. Music can be a powerful cue and mood regulator. 🎶

4. Explore Movement-Based Transitions: Incorporate physical movement (e.g., a short walk or dance) to help your child mentally and physically shift between activities. 🚶‍♂️💃

5. Preview the Environment: Before a transition, show your child pictures or videos of the new environment or activity. This helps them become familiar with what’s coming next, reducing uncertainty. 📸

6. Use a Countdown Timer: Introduce a visual or auditory timer that counts down to the transition. This can help your child anticipate the change without feeling rushed. For example, verbal cues e.g. “1 more minute” or setting a timer on your phone and getting the child to start and stop it.

7. Empower with Choices: Give your child some control by offering simple choices during transitions, such as which route to take or which task to do first. This can make them feel more involved and less resistant to change. ✔️

8. Create a Transition Ritual: Develop a consistent, fun routine (like a special handshake or song) that marks the beginning and end of each transition. This ritual can provide structure and predictability. 🔄

By trialling these strategies into your daily routine, you can help your child navigate transitions with greater ease and confidence! Remember, every child is unique—experiment with these strategies to find what works best for your little one! 💖
