Itโ€™s Time To ADJUST Your Sitting Posture To Reduce Back Pain!

Did you know there is more pressure on your spine SITTING than STANDING?! - So it's no surprise we have achy low back pain after a day in the office.

The key to reducing low back pain in the office is to encourage the natural lumbar curve and correct your sitting posture. We can do this by:

- Taking Regular Movement Breaks from Sitting. This could be as simple as getting up out of the chair and performing 3 stretches or walking to the bathroom. I suggest my patients get up every 40 mins.

- Use Back Support. If your chair doesn't support your lumbar spine, try placing a cushion or a lumbar support behind your back to encourage the natural curve in the spine.

- Shoulder Blade Squeezes. Sitting upright on a chair, rest your hands on your thigh. Now keep the shoulders down and draw your shoulders back and try to squeeze the blades together. Hold and count five and release, do this 3 times.

- Get Adjusted! Chiropractic adjustments encourage the natural lordotic curve and reduce neural and muscular tension.

Do you suffer from Tension Headaches?

Are you experiencing tightness or pressure across the front of your forehead or back of your neck?

There is no single cause for tension headaches, which often means they are multifactorial in nature. These are the most common triggers:

- Stress, fatigue, eye strain
- Postural stress
- Muscle tension
- Poor diet and sleep

Chiropractors can assess and diagnose your headache, then help you identify the underlying cause contributing to them so we can prevent them returning.

Soft tissue massage to release the muscle tension, combined with spinal manipulation to improve spinal mobility can release the pressure you're feeling across your forehead and neck.

If this something your experiencing, don't wait any longer book now with Ashleigh or Niki

WHAT ARE YOUR HEALTH GOALS FOR THE REST OF THE YEAR?

Incorporating daily physical movement is the easiest way to improve your mental and physical health.

Our bodies are designed to move in all different directions; we can run, jump, walk, swim, bend forward, backwards and so on.

However, most of us live a sedentary lifestyle working 9-5 and sit on average for 10-13 hours per day!

DOES THIS SOUND LIKE YOU?
Well it's time to start making small changes!
Take more small breaks. Get up every half hour to an hour, and move. Stretch. Take a walk at lunch. Take the stairs.

If you are more inclined, play a sport, go to the gym, do weight training or cycle on a regular basis. If not just move. Move more frequently and regularly.

By moving, you are strengthening your joints and muscles, which improves stability, balance, and coordination.

However, sometimes pain or injury can impact our ability to exercise.
If your experiencing back, hip, knee or ankle problems, let our chiropractors assess your condition to help get you the best treatment and have your return to your best possible healthy lifestyle!

Considering there are more people suffering lower back pain than any other musculoskeletal condition, there is a lot of misinformation about it on the internet today that can be confusing for a lot of people.

These are the most common myths I often hear:

๐Ÿ™…๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธMyth 1: "Rest is best when I have back pain"

- Previously bed rest was the number one recommendation to improve low back pain injuries. However, we now know that people with low back pain who remain active (even when in mild pain) do better long term. It appears that bed rest is actually counterintuitive and can detrimentally extend the recovery period.Mild to moderate sprains/strains and disc injuries benefit from early introduction of gentle movements such as light walking and stretching.

๐Ÿ™…๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธMyth 2: " I need a scan to see what is wrong with my back"

- In most cases this is not true! Most chiropractors should be able to diagnose your condition based on your history and physical exam without the need for imaging or other investigations. Approx 90% of low back pain causes are musculoskeletal, leaving only 10% requiring imaging to assess the cause of low back pain symptoms. More often MRIs and CT scans instill fear in people surrounding their back pain, as most imaging reports will show "something" but much of it is poorly linked to the pain your experiencing.

๐Ÿ™…๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธMyth 3: " Low back pain is normal"

- Although, low back pain is incredibly common and approx 80% of Aussies will experience it at some point in their lives, it is not considered normal to have constant stiffness and low back pain.
Chiropractic and other allied health professionals can assist with treatment and management of your symptoms. They can also assist with identifying the cause of your back pain through functional exams and ergonomic assessments.

I hope debunking these myths will help more people get out of pain sooner and have a smoother recovery ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ

Are you working from home? Is your workplace set up correctly?

Since Australians have started working from home, 55% of chiropractors have reported seeing a significant rise in the proportion of their existing patients presenting with spinal health issues as a result of working from home.

This week take 5 mins to make sure your work set up is ergonomically correct. Click this link to download a free ergonomic checklist https://www.chiro.org.au/patients/campaigns/workspace-week/

๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ // Ashleigh

Hi everyone! Just wanted to introduce myself ๐Ÿ˜Š
I am a practicing chiropractor based in Bulimba, Brisbane.

I have a passion for improving peopleโ€™s health and getting people back to what they love doing most! My interest in chiropractic started from a young age after experiencing the positive effects and pain relief chiropractic treatment provided.

But my aspirations to improve patients overall health and pain came from my own experience with chronic pain. This shaped how I treat my patients concerns/conditions and helped me thoroughly understand the physical and emotional impact that comes with chronic pain and injury.

Since completing my university studies I have furthered my education with training in soft tissue therapies.

I perform:
- joint mobilisation/manipulation
- active release to muscles and ligaments
- dry needling
- PNF stretching
- exercise rehabilitation
- drop piece technique

It's really important to me that I treat every patient's condition on an individual basis and don't follow a recipe card.

If you or anyone you know could benefit from chiropractic care, please feel welcome to get in touch as I would love to help!
