It’s very important that during a skin check every single spot on the skin be checked by the skin cancer physician using a dermatoscope. Sometimes the features of cancerous lesions are quite subtle.

Getting to know your skin and noticing any changes will help you find skin cancer early.

Recently, smartphone apps have been developed to assist with the early detection of skin cancer. Research has shown that in general, these applications can be inaccurate and should not be used instead of seeking the support of a medical professional. Cancer Council does not recommend the use of smartphone apps to self-diagnose skin cancer.

Reading these slides can potentially save lives.

It is important to ‘know the skin you’re in’ and seek medical advice if you notice anything new or changing on your skin. The first sign of a melanoma is often the appearance of a new spot, or a change in an existing freckle or mole.

Remember, melanomas are not always black – they can also be brown, pink, skin coloured or a combination of different shades.

What I see in my daily practice is that a lot of people don’t know they should use lip sunscreens, therefore they get a significant degree of sun damage on their lips in young ages. Lips (specially the lower lip) are quite susceptible to sun damage and vulnerable to skin cancers.
Applying SPF lip balm will minimise sun damage, prevents skin cancers and maintains the beauty of your lips.

Skin cancers such as basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, or even a type of melanoma called amelanotic melanoma (which is often missed) can look like a pink patch.
If you find a pink patch on your skin, please get it checked immediately.

This pleasant lady presented with a non-healing ulcer on her cutaneous upper lip for over a year.
That was a basal cell carcinoma which is a slow-growing type of skin cancer. I excised the lesion and repaired it with a flap with a good cosmetic outcome.

Beware of non-healing ulcers; they might be skin cancers.

I found this melanoma on the arm of this gentleman among the numerous brown spots during a skin check consultation. If you look carefully, you will see that the lesion stands out and looks different from the surrounding lesions. This is called “Ugly Duckling Sign”. Beware of ugly ducklings and see me if you notice any.

SPF indicates the amount of UVB radiation that can reach the skin with sunscreen compared with no sunscreen. It is calculated knowing how much UVB radiation is necessary to create redness (burn) of the skin. If you wore SPF 50+, for example, you could stay in the sun 50 times longer before burning compared to if you were wearing no sunscreen at all.
It is important to realise that the difference in UVB protection between SPF 30+ and SPF 50+ is small, increasing protection from 96.7% to 98%.
