An exciting new service for women is expanding at Gold Coast Health. ♀️

The Outpatients Hysteroscopy service gives women faster access to care with little disruption to daily life - in fact, patients can have the procedure and go home in the same day.

It is a minimally invasive medical procedure that allows a doctor to examine the inside of the uterus and cervix to diagnose causes of heavy periods, infertility, postmenopausal bleeding, and recurrent miscarriages.

🏥 Gold Coast University Hospital is one of the first hospitals in Australia to provide the outpatient service, with clinicians visiting us from all over the country to learn. Now, we're about to commence the service at Robina Hospital to support more women.

Here's what women can expect on the day of their procedure. 🌟

With an interdisciplinary team and a holistic, biopsychosocial approach, our Endometriosis & Pelvic Pain Interdisciplinary Clinical Service (EPPICS) supports women physically, emotionally and socially.

These three incredible women are our EPPICS Allied Health team, who provide physio, dietetics, social work and psychology to our patients.

"Pelvic pain and endometriosis are rarely “just physical” conditions," the ladies said.

"Pain is influenced by the nervous system, stress, trauma history, movement, sleep, nutrition and life load. Women attending EPPICS often present with a complex picture of overlapping health and life challenges. Treating only one aspect—such as prescribing medication or surgery—does not fully address the drivers that may be maintaining or amplifying their pain."

By supporting both the mental and physical components of pelvic pain, the service improves a woman’s ability to understand her symptoms and develop practical, sustainable strategies to work with her pain rather than feeling overwhelmed by it.

"After clinics we often see shifts in understanding, confidence and empowerment," the team said.

"Women often describe leaving EPPICS with a clearer understanding of their condition and practical tools for managing their pain long term. The clinic is highly impactful, offering coordinated, compassionate and evidence-based care that supports wellbeing."

By addressing the whole person rather than just the diagnosis, EPPICS supports women to regain agency in their lives, improve daily functioning, and build long-term self-management skills.

Today is human papillomavirus (HPV) Awareness Day - a timely reminder to get vaccinated (free for under 26-year-olds) and have cervical screening if you're a female between 25-74 years old.

HPV is very common, but cervical cancer doesn’t have to be. Regular cervical screening can detect early cell changes long before symptoms appear, giving people more control over their health and more options for treatment if needed.

If your results do show abnormalities or a type of HPV, you may be referred for a colposcopy with one of these lovely ladies - led by Nurse Practitioner Jan.

"Gold Coast Health does more than 5,000 colposcopies each year," Jan said.

"A colposcopy is a quick, often painless, outpatient procedure, similar to a Pap test, used to examine the cervix for abnormal cells. If you’re eligible for cervical screening, booking your test when it’s due is one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect your wellbeing. It’s a quick appointment that can make a lasting difference."

From the moment Mikayla gained insight into the role of a midwife during a presentation at Griffith University's Open Day, she knew that midwifery was the career for her.

"I was always really interested in women's health, and it felt like everything just clicked after that presentation," she said.

"I'm looking forward to growing and finding myself as a midwife this year."

Mikayla is one of our 15 Newly Qualified Midwives (NQM) who have just started with us, and she will join a Midwifery Group Practice (MGP) team.

"I love the idea of being able to support women across the continuum of their pregnancy journey," she said.

"Having that continuity of care is so important for women and their families and I'm excited to be part of that."

During Queensland Women's Week, we are celebrating our incredible Gold Coast women who make a difference in our health service every day. 💞

Spotted: advocacy in action! 🌟

Our very own Dr Shabnam Gujadhur is passionate about spreading awareness of ovarian cancer, following her own personal experience with the disease.

She was recently featured as part of a Queensland Health news article for Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month where she outlines the symptoms which led to her diagnosis.

Her advice? You know your body best, so don't hesitate to get checked if you feel like something is not quite right.

For 35 years, Nicole has been walking along side women during some of their hardest days.

Nicole has been the Clinical Nurse Consultant (CNC) for our Early Pregnancy Assessment and Management Service (EPAMS) service for 20 of those years, which identifies women who present with difficulties in early pregnancy (up to 16 weeks) to ensure they are provided with timely access to interventions.

"I started off in the Emergency Department and we saw women presenting with early pregnancy problems, like bleeding or pain, but didn't have a designated area they could be seen quickly," Nicole said.

"A service was set up to expedite care, which was one of the first in Australia. It's really grown from there."

EPAMS is a predominantly nurse-led service that supports more than 1,000 women each year. While the team often has to give more bad news than good, Nicole knows the secret to how to give women the best experience possible during such a challenging time.

"You can't fix what's happening, but you can acknowledge it," Nicole said.

"It makes such a difference to them if you acknowledge the situation and take the time to talk about it. They often thank us at the end of it."

Thank you for 35 incredible years of service, Nicole. You make such a difference to these women's lives. 💞

“Mum, I’m famous!” 🎨

That was the excited reaction 11-year-old Hailee had upon seeing her artwork proudly on display in Gold Coast Health’s new Child and Youth Mental Health Service (CYMHS) facility.

She’s one of several talented young people whose art contribute to the welcoming, community-centred environment the space offers to children, youth and their families within the Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct at Southport.

“I think it’s cool that the children who come here get to see artwork created by other kids around the same age,” Hailee said.

Mum Ali is “unbelievably proud” of her, understandably!

“It’s an amazing opportunity and a huge deal for her, particularly as she is applying for the arts excellence program for high school next year,” Ali said.

“My son is a patient of CYMHS, so now whenever we get to come for appointments, he can see his sister’s art on the wall.”

Five‑year‑old Tully is one of just 90 Australians living with Pompe disease, an ultra‑rare genetic disorder that prevents the body from breaking down glycogen, leading to muscle weakness and potential heart and breathing issues.

"His Dad and I underwent routine genetic carrier screening and we found out we were both carriers of Pompe disease," his mum, Shelley, said.

"We were told Tully had a one in four chance of diagnosis, and at 16 months old he was confirmed to have late-onset Pompe disease. Early testing showed he already had symptoms, despite appearing healthy."

For three years now, Tully has been visiting us fortnightly for an enzyme infusion to manage his condition - or as he understands it, get "muscle juice" - which he will continue having indefinitely.

"We don't expect him to have a rapid decline and the treatments buy us time until there's another option," Shelley said.

"Thankfully Tully is still hitting all his milestones and is a very active little guy - he loves his swimming and skateboarding!"

On Rare Disease Day, Shelley is hoping to raise more awareness for Pompe disease.

"Living with a rare disease is more than you can imagine," she said.

"We're strong supporters of genetic carrier screening and newborn screening to identify potential conditions earlier and give children the best chance possible."

With immense gratitude, today we’re celebrating the retirement of Lorraine “Bubbles” Bublitz, a shining star of renal nursing. ✨

In almost 45 years with Gold Coast Health, Bubbles has left a lasting influence on renal care that will be felt for many years to come.

She’s held almost every nursing role in the renal service, from Nurse Unit Manager to Clinical Nurse Consultant, and now Nurse Practitioner Navigator.

Our pioneering kidney supportive palliative care service is just one example of Bubbles’ impact – she played a key role launching this at Gold Coast Health.

When reflecting on her experience as a renal nurse, Bubbles highlighted the fabulous colleagues, evolving technology, and close relationships with patients.

“The thing I love most about working in renal is the continuity of care with our patients, who we get to know really well. Some of them become like family," she said.

“It’s been wonderful, and I feel very fortunate to have worked with so many great people. I’ve had a privileged career.”

We’ve been fortunate to have you Bubbles – you’ll be sorely missed. 💛

As a Midwife Educator supporting healthier pregnancies, Karen plays a key role in helping women and their families through pregnancy and the transition into Community Child & Family Health.

Karen has dedicated nearly 40 years to Gold Coast Health as a Midwife and Nurse, and this new role is all about teaching her colleagues how to best support families.

“I feel really privileged and excited to be in this role,” Karen said.

“I support midwives with their professional development and education to ultimately provide safe and quality care to the families we look after.”

Their current priorities include preventive health practices such as smoking and va**ng reduction, alcohol screening, vaccination, nutrition, and physical activity with the aim of reducing gestational diabetes.

“It’s ultimately about working to improve the outcomes of women’s health and their future baby’s health,” Karen said.

These new positions are funded through the Queensland Government’s PQKF capacity uplift, strengthening services that support children and families in the first 2000 days.

Don't let mosquitoes ruin your summer adventures 🦟

Mosquito bites can cause severe infections and can also spread harmful viruses.

You can protect yourself from mozzies by:

✅Using repellents, like DEET or Picaridin, on exposed skin
✅Wearing loose, long-sleeved, light-coloured clothing
✅Using mosquito coils or zappers outdoors
✅Fixing your fly screens.

And remember -- mozzies are most active in the morning, evening and night.

Together we can stop mosquito bites, and the spread of harmful viruses, in our community.
