Acne scars form as a result of inflamed blemishes caused by skin pores that become engorged with excess oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria.
When the pore swells, it can cause a break in the follicle wall. If the damage is deep, the skin attempts to repair it with new collagen fibers, which may not match the original skin texture, leading to scarring.
Types of Acne Scars
1. Atrophic Scars (most common with acne): Ice pick scars are deep, narrow, and pitted, while boxcar scars are broad with sharp edges. Rolling scars have a wave-like appearance due to damage under the skin.
2. Hypertrophic & Keloid Scars: These scars are raised, thickened tissue, more commonly found on the chest, shoulders, jawline, and back. Treatment Options Non-invasive or Minimally Invasive: Topical retinoids encourage cell turnover and collagen production. Chemical peels, such as glycolic, salicylic, or TCA peels, help resurface the skin. Microneedling induces controlled micro-injuries to trigger healing, while LED light therapy reduces inflammation and supports healing. Advanced Clinical Treatments: Fractional CO₂ laser resurfaces the skin and stimulates collagen production. RF microneedling combines microneedling with radiofrequency for deeper remodeling.
Subcision releases fibrotic strands tethering down rolling scars. Hyaluronic acid, biostimulation, or bio-regeneration with insulin growth factor may also be used.
For Raised Scars: Steroid injections can flatten keloids or hypertrophic scars. Silicone gels or sheets can be used long-term to soften and fade raised scars. Laser treatments, such as pulsed dye laser, can reduce redness and thickness.
