What’s this you might ask? Well today, in order to get in before the rush of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, I went and had my Contrast Enhanced Mammogram. I had big plans of taking lots of photos and documenting my experience, but it was so quick and easy that I didn’t get time and completely forgot. I was too busy chatting to my wonderful radiographer who not only put my cannula in, but took my 3D mammogram, and made me feel very comfortable throughout the whole process. I even managed to get an extra spot view for my trouble, and it was all over before I knew it! Thankfully, there was no signs of anything nasty and I was out of there in 20 minutes. If you have dense or complex breasts, or you are at higher risk of breast cancer due to your personal or family history, please consider asking your GP or Breast specialist if this test is suitable for you. It is a privilege to have taken on the role of President of the Australasian Society of Breast Physicians (ASBP). I acknowledge the outstanding contributions of Dr. Lauren Arnold, our outgoing President, and Dr. Katrina Tiller, Chair of Education, in transforming our training program over the last 3 years. This enhancement will enable breast physicians to acquire expertise through workplace-based training, creating confident and competent clinicians who can work in both the public and private sectors. I appreciate the commitment of my fellow board members and look forward to our collective efforts. For all my GP colleagues, if you are wondering who to vote for in the “other” presidential election of 2024….I urge you to consider my friend Michael Wright for RACGP President. He has all the attributes to represent us as an experienced GP and lobbier, with expertise in many areas that will combine to make an excellent leader, following on from the exceptional job Nicole Higgins has done. Spending a few days in Canberra at the BreastScreen Australia conference. It’s been 5 years since one of these was held and the discussions are fascinating. I’m also here with my colleagues from the Australasian Society of Breast Physicians spreading the word about our revamped training program and hoping to attract more people interested in breast medicine to do further training and complete their Fellowships.
