Melanoma is the most dangerous type of skin cancer, often caused by UV damage from the sun or solariums. It can appear as a new or changing mole, often with an irregular shape, multiple colours, or a spot that bleeds, itches, or doesn’t heal. Melanoma can spread quickly to other parts of the body, making early detection critical. The good news? When caught early, melanoma is highly treatable, so regular skin checks could save your life.

A dermatoscope is a specialised diagnostic tool used by skin cancer professionals to examine the skin with enhanced clarity and precision. By combining magnification with polarised light, it allows doctors to see beneath the surface layer of the skin- revealing patterns, colours, and structures not visible to the naked eye. This advanced technology plays a crucial role in the early detection and accurate diagnosis of skin cancers, including melanoma. 🧡🖤

Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) is the most common type of skin cancer, usually caused by years of sun exposure. It often shows up as a shiny bump, a red patch, or a sore that doesn’t heal-especially on areas like the face, ears, neck, or shoulders. BCC grows slowly and rarely spreads, but it can still cause damage if not treated. The good news? It’s highly treatable when caught early, so regular skin checks really do make a difference.

Know the signs of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). SCC often appears on sun-exposed areas like the face, lips, ears, hands, or scalp as a scaly patch, sore, or raised growth that may crust or bleed. While most are treatable if caught early, they can become invasive and spread if left untreated. If you notice a spot or sore that hasn’t healed within two months, especially in a sun exposed area, it’s important to get it checked by a skin cancer doctor. Skin cancer doesn’t always look suspicious, some spots can seem harmless to the naked eye. That’s why getting to know your skin is so important. Moles are common and usually harmless, but changes in colour, shape, or size can be a red flag. Monthly self-checks and regular skin checks with your doctor are key to early detection. Early action = less invasive treatment and better outcomes. Stay sun safe. Know your skin. See your skin cancer doctor if anything changes.🧡🖤 Make sure you can trust the quality of your skin check provider, look for an accredited skin cancer doctor at skincancercollege.org/locate-a-doctor/

Determining the right balance of sun exposure to obtain sufficient Vitamin D without increasing skin cancer risk is essential, especially in sunny WA, where UV levels are high for most of the year.
About one-third of Aussies have low Vitamin D levels.
Vitamin D is a hormone that regulates calcium levels, crucial for bone and muscle development. Deficiency can lead to bone and joint pain and increase the risk of osteoporosis.
Approximately 90% of Vit D is absorbed through direct sunlight exposure on the skin. The amount of sun exposure required varies based on factors such as your location, skin type, and the amount of skin exposed. Generally, exposing more skin results in higher Vitamin D production.
When the UV Index is 3 or above, a few minutes of sun exposure to the face, arms, and hands on most days is sufficient for adequate Vitamin D levels. During these times, it's important to use sun protection measures to reduce your skin cancer risk.

Winter is an ideal time for a skin check, as reduced sun exposure makes it easier for doctors to examine moles accurately. Despite cooler weather, harmful UV levels can still occur, so it's important to check the UV index daily and use sun protection (SPF50+ sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, etc.) when levels are 3 or above. Regular skin checks and year-round sun safety are essential for early detection and skin health.🧡🖤
