I had a cold last week - I must have blown my nose three hundred times. As soon as I started getting sick I stopped half my skincare routine- no retinol, no AHAs or BHAs - and just did cleanser and moisturiser (half the time I didn’t even use sunscreen because I went absolutely nowhere).

If I had continued with skincare that exfoliates over my skin that was red raw from blowing my nose every few minutes, I would have created a huge, visible, possibly painful skin situation that would have taken weeks to months to sort out. Exfoliation is usually only for unimpaired skin - there are some exceptions to this but if you have something like a cold and you’ve had to blow your nose all day, you have essentially created physical exfoliation again and again to your face- so applying chemical exfoliation to that compromised area will result in redness, pain, peeling, and extreme sensitivity.

I know sometimes stopping and restarting retinol can feel like you’re losing gains of smooth skin, but TRUST ME BRO - once you end up in a messy, red, painful situation, then you have to stop for much, much longer to sort it out before you can restart.

It’s sometimes really easy to work out - and sometimes it’s complete and total utter confusion. As a general rule, the starting layers are light and transparent, think toner and HA, and then move to heavier and opaque - like moisturisers and sunscreens. If you put them in any random order, your skin can’t be affected positively by the last layers. If you need a skincare routine reset or just need some tweaks, you can make a skincare consultation booking in person or via Telehealth 💕

Regrowing hair is so slow and it can be really hard to stick to routines when you’re unlikely to see results for months and months. That’s why when I make hair and scalp routine recommendations, I make them as easy to stick to as possible while also relying heavily on ingredients that are going to make an actual difference. My skincare routine appointments can also be used for scalp care routines - if your part is widening, or your hair is thinning, or it’s overall just falling out, book an appointment today 💕

If Invasion Day fell on my clinic day, I wouldn’t see patients - Monday should be a national day of mourning and we should all be learning what we didn’t learn at school. I strongly encourage all businesses to take a stand and actually speak their values 🖤💛❤️

If things aren’t going well with your skin care routine, bring it all back to basics.

Morning is a quick cleanse, vitamin c, moisturiser, sunscreen.

Evening is a double cleanse, moisturiser, and maybe a retinol.

That’s it.

This is the minimal skincare routine that I get patients to go back to when they’ve been acting like mad scientists with their routines and now they can’t figure out what’s not working because they’ve suddenly got a 14 step routine.

Note that this ISN’T the basic routine I recommend when your skin totally loses it and becomes red, irritated, or reactive! That routine has no vitamin c and especially no retinol!

Why are painful periods better for drinking warm and hot water, instead of cold or iced water?

In Chinese Medicine, drinking warm and hot water is essential for a smooth flow and pain free menstrual cycles. This is because Qi and energy is already weakened during your menstrual cycle - you’re already losing blood and fatigue hits hard - so using energy from forcing your Spleen to warm up cold drinks causes everything to go even further askew.

When we keep our energy in check, we then have a smooth flow of Qi - and when there’s a smooth flow of Qi, we experience pain free periods 💕

Now, does this mean warm water is going to cure PCOS or endometriosis? Hell no. But hot water won’t make it worse, and it’ll improve it to some level. If it’s more typical dysmennorhea, your symptoms might disappear, and if you have a more serious cause of menstrual pain - it might just take the edge off, it’s still worth it!

In traditional Chinese Medicine, your Spleen and Stomach and digestion are like a small fire - and that fire needs gentle heat and warmth to break down food and turn it into energy that can be used by your body.

Conversely, drinking cold or icy water is like putting out that fire - it weakens the digestion process immediately, and can lead to bloating, tiredness, and feeling sluggish.

We want to keep the digestive fire burning steadily all day to help our bodies absorb nutrients better and support smooth circulation- that’s why this works so well for people who have constipation or diarrhoea or a mix of both.

While icy water is refreshing for a few second, in Chinese Medicine it’s seen an something that will slowly drain your energy over time.

DRINK HOT WATER says every Chinese Medicine Practitioner, every day, to every patient. Constipated? Drink hot water. Painful periods? Drink hot water. Feeling sluggish? Drink hot water. Bloating? Drink hot water. And I know it’s 42 degrees 🫠… so maybe skip today and start tomorrow when it cools down, but getting rid of iced and cold water is one of the easiest thing anyone can do to improve their health!
