Welcome to the latest edition of Emergency Education. Through this series, Dr Simon Rohde, Director of St Andrew’s Emergency Centre, shares valuable information and insights into common and not so common emergency presentations.
Dr Rohde says: “As an emergency doctor, it’s crucial for me to inform you about a serious condition that can affect anyone: arrhythmias. These are abnormal heart rhythms that can range from harmless to life-threatening. Common symptoms include palpitations, dizziness, fainting and chest pain. While some arrhythmias are benign, others can lead to complications like stroke or cardiac arrest.
“Serious causes of arrhythmias include heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, thyroid disorders and substance abuse. Ignoring symptoms or delaying treatment can have dire consequences, including permanent heart damage or even death.
“If you experience any symptoms of an arrhythmia, don't hesitate to seek medical help immediately. Early detection and treatment can significantly improve outcomes. Your health is paramount, so don't take any chances with your heart. Stay informed, stay vigilant, and prioritise your well-being. Your heart will thank you for it.”
