ANZAC Day 2025 - A Message from AVHS

This ANZAC Day, as we pause to honour the courage and sacrifice of our service men and women, AVHS extends our deepest respect to all who have served our nation.

We recognise that the impacts of service can extend far beyond active duty. To those carrying invisible wounds - the psychological and physical effects of war - please know you’re not alone.

Reaching out takes tremendous courage. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is treatable, and recovery is possible. There is strength in seeking support.

We stand with you.

Resilience plays a significant part in our well-being, so RSL Active and The Resilience Shield have teamed up to develop a series of videos on important steps we can take to maintain our health and well-being.

https://www.rslaustralia.org/all-veterans-wellness-toolbox

The Resilience Shield’s videos highlight areas from their research into what resilience is and how it can be developed in individuals to become more resilient in their day-to-day lives.

Their discussions introduce concepts and techniques for developing and maintaining resilience through mindset, mindfulness, quality sleep, injury management, social engagements and other factors.

NB. This post is for informational purposes only, and is not intended to replace professional care. If you are experiencing mental health concerns, please seek guidance from a licensed provider. Your well-being is important, and professional support is essential for proper care.

Today’s 11th hour is an opportunity to pause and pay respect to the service and sacrifice of our Veterans and current serving personnel.

The RSL have an interactive map to locate Remembrance Day services across Australia today which generally commence prior to 11am.

Whether at a service, at work or home, pausing for just a minute means so much.

Lest We Forget.

Appearing in the bleak landscapes on the Western Front where soldiers pressed them into letters, the poppy inspired the medic Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae’s poem ‘In Flanders Fields’.

After the war, the poppy developed into an iconic symbol of Remembrance through the work of Mona Michael, Anna Guerin and countless women worldwide.

This century-old tradition of volunteering and selling poppies to help families and people impacted by war continues today, such as through Australia’s Poppy Appeal - providing life-changing support for Veterans and their families.

The wattle is a cheery flower that signals the start of spring and new beginnings.

Fittingly, the wattle was designated in 1947 for use by the War Widows Guild founder, Mrs Jessie Vasey.

Her birthday coincides with today's War Widows Day, held in states across Australia to recognise the contributions and sacrifices of war widows and widowers in our communities.

All service members in the ADF are first aid trained, yet it is a life-saving skill that everyone should consider learning.

One area many are unfamiliar with is the difference between a heart attack and sudden cardiac arrest.

As time counts in the event of a sudden cardiac arrest, international Restart A Heart Day aims to raise awareness and educate communities about CPR and AEDs.

To assist this goal, The Heart Foundation has a helpful guide, including the Chain of Survival for cardiac arrest here:
