Tendons are found all over the body, and while you may know a little about them, some of these facts might surprise you 👀
👉 So, what are tendons?
They’re strong connective tissues that attach muscles to bones and help move our joints.
Here are 10 fascinating tendon facts ⬇️
1️⃣ Tendons connect muscles to bones, allowing movement when muscles contract.
2️⃣ They come in many shapes and sizes – long and thin (like the Achilles), flat, or thick. Flat tendons are called aponeuroses.
3️⃣ Tendons act like elastic bands, stretching and recoiling – but too much force can cause injury.
4️⃣ Unlike elastic bands, tendons are living tissue and are influenced by hormones, nutrition, and medical conditions.
5️⃣ Tendons don’t just attach muscles to bones – some even attach to structures like the eyeball 👁️
6️⃣ Tendon injuries are more commonly caused by overuse than sudden tears. Healing can be slow due to limited blood supply.
7️⃣ Healthy tendons have well-organised collagen fibres. Degeneration causes disorganisation, reducing strength and elasticity.
8️⃣ The Achilles tendon is the strongest tendon in the body – and yes, it’s named after the Greek myth 🏛️
9️⃣ The smallest tendon is found in the inner ear, attached to the smallest muscle in the body.
🔟 Muscles and tendons work together as a contractile unit to move your joints.
💡 Understanding your tendons is key to preventing and managing injury.
