Planning a trip home to the UK and Ireland to get married escalated quickly for Bupa team member Mabs and the trip soon became a 12 month sabbatical and duel continent cycling adventure.

English-born Mabs and her Irish partner covered a massive 11,000 kilometres on bike wheels during that time and it’s given her a fresh perspective on life and work.

“Cycling is that perfect pace. Faster than walking, slower than a car. You see the world differently. You think differently,” Mabs said.

“There were hard days. I hadn’t trained, I was chugging uphill for 10km stretches. But it taught me that the pain is temporary, tough moments pass.

“I’ve slowed down. Now, I’m more strategic and I’m taking stock. I’m making space for the tools I forgot I had. Things like daily intent setting, affirmations, and mindfulness.

Cleaner by trade and proud mum always, Sammy brings a little extra love to our aged care home in Bellarine Lakes each week when her son tags along.

“He absolutely loves visiting,” she says. “The residents adore him and the staff make him feel so welcome. Having my family accepted here makes this feel even more like home.”

40 years ago, Karma Chameleon was topping the charts, Martina Navratilova was winning Wimbledon, and Mary-Anne Hamilton was just beginning her nursing career.

Since then? She’s cared for thousands of people — in hospitals, GP clinics, community centres and local schools.

As a key part of Eastbrooke Family Clinic, Doncaster (part of the Bupa Medical Centre network), Mary-Anne says there’s never a dull moment:

“After more than 40 years working in hospitals and then General Practice, I’ve also taken up community immunisation. I love visiting schools and local community centres – though I’ll admit children are moving targets. It can make vaccinations tricky!”

We’re lucky to have nurses like Mary-Anne on the team — curious, kind, and with plenty of wisdom to share.

Lilian and Esmeralda have been friends since they met at work 8 years ago and for Lilian, friendship is built on trust, openness and a good dose of honesty.

“I believe you can sense when someone can truly be trusted - you just feel comfortable talking about anything under the sun with them,” Lilian says.

“I’m very transparent with my friends — if I’m upset, they know, and if we ever have an issue, we sort it out straight away. And of course, I’m happiest when my friends are happy.”

John from our Bupa Optical Emporium store gets just as much from helping people today, as when he first started in the industry 24 years ago.

John recalls helping a 10-year-old, who was having trouble at school, as a career highlight.

“They’d been struggling in class with undiagnosed vision issues. When they put glasses on and saw clearly for the first time - their whole face lit up,” John said.

“That moment has stuck with me.”

John encouraged people to not believe everything they read online.

“If you think rubbing toothpaste on your lenses will stop them from fogging up - it won’t” he says.

Young mum of two, Angelica-Hazel says cancer reshaped her perspective on life.

Angelica-Hazel was 33 when she finished breastfeeding her toddler, when symptoms, first thought to be caused by mastitis, wouldn’t clear up.

Tests revealed she had breast cancer.

The Bupa member, and practicing nutritionist, says she wanted to do all she could not just beat the cancer but recover well.

“I tackled cancer holistically and used every part of my extras cover. I was grateful I didn’t have to choose between healing and finances,” Angelica-Hazel says.

“Chemo was overwhelming, mentally and physically. I couldn’t pretend to be grateful but eventually, I truly was.”

“I realised the little things with my kids are actually the big things.”

Freiclyn is known as the go-to person at our Bankstown Aged Care home and after a decade with Bupa, there’s not much she doesn’t know.

When it comes to building trust, Freiclyn says confident communication can make all the difference when working in complex situations.

Outside of work, she loves spending time with her daughter, gardening, cooking and sharing laughs with her husband. She dreams of visiting the fjords of Norway.
