One of Able2's Neurodiversity Affirming Workplace (NAW) panel's goals is to change the way we talk about autism.

For a long time, the term "Autism Spectrum Disorder" (ASD) has been the standard. But many in the autistic community are now challenging this language. They're moving away from the word "disorder" and embracing neurodiversity — all brains are a natural part of human variation.

This shift isn't just about words. It's about fostering acceptance, challenging stigma, and helping autistic people build a positive self-identity.

Using terms that are outdated, judgmental, or pathologising can be harmful and invalidating. Mindful language promotes inclusion, respects autonomy, and fosters a more supportive environment for neurodiverse people to thrive authentically. That's ultimately what we want!

All feedback is encouraged and if you have any questions or thoughts for the NAW panel, please send them through to us.

On Wednesday, 20 August, the government announced 'Thriving Kids', a new $2bn investment into the futures of young Aussies, set to roll out from July 2026.

It’s designed for children under nine "with mild to moderate developmental delay and autism", aiming to give families earlier, more coordinated support outside the NDIS.

Disability and NDIS Minister, Mark Butler, said kids who are already on the NDIS, and those who enrol before the rollout, will stay on the scheme, and that there won't be any immediate impacts on families.

The government says the program aims to create a more integrated system, but its success will depend on design and implementation.

Reactions from the community have been mixed, with some saying it could strengthen early intervention, and others worry about how it will work in practice.

Happy National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children's Day!

Today, we celebrate the incredible strength and spirit of First Nations children. They are our future leaders, storytellers, and knowledge holders, and we are committed to creating a space at Able2 where all children feel safe, valued, and proud of their identity. Our commitment goes beyond today. We're proud of our staff for engaging in Cultural Competence training, a vital step in our journey toward reconciliation and a truly child-safe workplace. This work aligns with our support for the NDIS's First Nations Strategy.

Let's celebrate these amazing kids and their connection to family, community, and Country!
