Influenza Vaccine 2026 – Timing Matters

Have you ever had the flu vaccine… and then still caught the flu?

It’s a common and understandable frustration — but there are a few important things to know.

🦠 How the flu vaccine works
Each year, the influenza vaccine is designed to protect against four strains of influenza virus (usually two influenza A strains and two influenza B strains).

These strains are carefully selected based on global surveillance, particularly from flu activity seen in the Northern Hemisphere and other countries ahead of our season.

However, influenza is constantly changing, and not every circulating strain can be perfectly matched each year.

💉 Timing is key
Evidence shows that the flu vaccine works best in the first 3–4 months after vaccination, with protection gradually decreasing over time.
Overall, vaccine effectiveness can reduce by around 10% every month, which means when you get vaccinated matters.

📅 What happened last year? (2025 season)
In NSW, we saw an unusual late rise in influenza cases in November, which is later than the typical peak season.

This highlights that flu seasons don’t always follow the expected pattern — and protection later in the year can still be important.

✅ What does this mean for you?
The flu vaccine is still your best protection against severe illness and hospitalisation

Perfect timing doesn’t exist, but vaccination is generally recommended before peak flu season (usually May–June)

Getting vaccinated too early may mean reduced protection later in the season, but delaying too long can leave you unprotected when cases start rising

👉 The key message:
It’s better to be vaccinated than not at all — but timing can help maximise your protection.

If you’re unsure about the best time for your flu shot this year, speak to your GP — we’re happy to guide you based on your individual risk.
