Lomilomi is a deeply restorative, relaxing and nourishing massage. A session typically takes around 1.5 hours. The long flowing and rhythmical strokes can create a hypnotic effect which bring the mind into a place of stillness and presence. Treatment can be given with as much or as little pressure over the whole body as required. It works on the circulatory, lymphatic, muscular, nervous, digestive and respiratory systems of the body. The word lomi means to “shift’, “move”, “knead”, “soothe”, and in connection with this meaning, another way to understand lomilomi is that on an energetic level it can release energy blocks in the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual body, shifting, moving and guiding it to heal and realign itself towards greater balance and harmony.
The technique and sequence I use, working with the hands only (differing from other forms which use forearms and dance like movements), comes from the lineage passed on to my teacher, Dawn Charlton, from Hawaiian Kahuna Sherman Dudoit, and is part of the traditional old style lomilomi.
Although there are as many different lomilomi styles as there are lomi practitioners, there is an absolute common thread that runs throughout, and that is that the giver (massage practitioner) begins with p**e (prayer) offering their service from a place of unconditional love, care and compassion - ALOHA. In Hawaii ‘alo’ is the presence of divine/love and ‘ha’ is breath, or spirit. So it is, that a lomilomi treatment occurs through the breath of the divine which is maintained by the giver throughout.
Traditional lomilomi was practiced in Hawaii within family groups and passed on from one generation to the next. As an ancient Polynesian healing art, it was brought to the shores of Hawaii by Polynesian ocean navigators, perhaps around 400 A.D. When Europeans invaded in the late 1700s many customs and practices, including lomilomi, went underground and were practiced in secret to protect their longevity, sacredness and to ensure the passing on to future generations.
Only within the last 50 years has lomilomi been accessible for Western students to learn. Why? In alignment with many 21st Century indigenous healers, leaders, teachers and elders all around the world, I believe Hawaiian Kahunas (master teachers) are also responding to the great disharmony that they see occurring in the world today. They recognise the importance of sharing their knowledge, wisdom and skills with whomever may listen and respond. Relationship to land and country, relationship to each other, relationship to ones self, relationship to spirit, and the act of reconciliation (ho’oponopono) are all indigenous lessons we must pay deeper attention to if we are, as individuals, wanting to affect a global shift returning to environmental balance, peace and harmony. I pay my respects to all First nation people of the world, and am deeply grateful for those who are dedicated to sharing their knowledge, wisdom, and skills for the greater good of all humanity.
ABOUT ME
My father is Samoan, and my mother is Australian. I come from English, German and Polynesian lineage. My strong ground is lutruwita – Tasmania where I have spent most of my years, whilst my heart sings also for Samoa where I spent my earliest years.
My home now is just south of larapuna, in the very north eastern part of the island. I live with my two beautiful daughters and partner and have been working passionately in my local community for almost two decades.
I hold a Bachelor in both Music and Education, and am also a TaKeTiNa teacher, Rhythm2Recovery and DRUMBEAT facilitator, Circle of Security facilitator, and baby massage consultant. Currently I am also teaching Mindfulness at the local school for 7 and 8 year olds. I have done so much study and training over the years – obsessed with a life full of learning and evolving. In Sanskrit, an ancient language of India, my name ‘lila’ (simply made up by my father!) carries the meaning and essence of ‘creative, divine play with the universe’. I often think of this as I dream and track my own unique path through this life.
Stepping onto my path as Lomilomi practitioner feels like the most natural thing in the world! It is in my blood, bones and DNA. I feel blessed to have been given the opportunity to weave Polynesian spiritual wisdom, bodywork and rhythmical flow into something beautiful and powerful that I can give to my community. I feel driven to want to share this amazing work, to more than just one client at a time. Hence, this FB page.
It is very similar for baby massage. Having worked with many mothers and fathers, supporting and guiding them to offer loving touch through massage to their new babies, I see the benefits first hand. Positive attachment and connection, social, emotional, spiritual and physical health is all supported. The bond between caregiver and baby strengthens, as does the safety and security baby feels, allowing happy and healthy development. Again, I am excited to share my skills, insights and lessons with community.
