A recent report on Australia’s new Urgent Care Clinics raises an important point about how healthcare works best.
Since 2023, more than 130 Urgent Care Clinics have opened across Australia to treat urgent but non-life-threatening issues like infections, minor injuries and illnesses that need quick attention.
The report shows they are being widely used, with millions of visits and high patient satisfaction.
That’s encouraging.
But it also highlights a challenge.
In around one in three visits, there was no follow-up communication with the patient’s usual GP.
This matters because healthcare rarely happens in a single visit.
Good healthcare often comes from continuity - seeing a doctor who knows your history, your medications, and how your health has changed over time.
That relationship helps ensure care is coordinated and nothing important is missed.
Urgent care clinics have an important role in the system.
But the foundation of healthcare will always be the ongoing relationship between a patient and their GP.
At North St Ives Medical Practice, that long-term relationship with our patients is something we value deeply.
Because the best care isn’t just about treating today’s problem.
It’s about looking after your health over the long term.
