On Day 4 of Jean Hailes Women's Health Week, we recognise the theme of ‘Pain to power.'

Renee, a young mum from Adelaide, woke up one morning with a painful rash that would spread across her back, hips and feet. “It got to a point where I had to walk with a stick, and I couldn’t play with my son.”

She was later diagnosed with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis by a dermatologist. Renee says that the dermatologist “understood my condition and prescribed me a medication that has changed my life.”

Our Help helps portal features stories of women like Renee who have experienced the life-changing impact of dermatology care and treatment.

Today is Day 2 of Jean Hailes with the theme of 'Take the Lead'.

Taking charge of your health is important that's why we encourage you to take the lead when visiting your dermatologist by equipping yourself with the right tools and information to get the most out of your appointment. This is your appointment and your time. You always have a right to ask questions about your skin, your health, and your treatment options. Asking questions will help you get the best possible care.

It's the start of Jean Hailes ! Today's theme ‘Every check matters' reminds all women to prioritise their health checks, including skin checks.

Australia has one of the highest skin cancer rates in the world. That’s why we encourage you to check all areas of your skin regularly. Be alert to any new or changing moles and spots and if you notice anything new or different, see your general practitioner (GP) or dermatologist promptly.

What to expect when you visit a dermatologist?

Dermatologists are specialist medical doctors who provide diagnosis and treatment for conditions of the skin, hair, and nails.

If you think you might need to see a dermatologist, speak to your GP (family doctor). GPs are able to diagnose and manage many skin conditions. If your skin condition is complex, high risk or requires specialist care, your GP will refer you to a dermatologist.

This week, to celebrate National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children's Day, we are showcasing an exciting new community-led research initiative: Ngangk Ngabala Ngoonda (Sun Safety) of Young Mob in WA.

This project is working to strengthen sun safety knowledge, practices, and skin cancer risk awareness among Aboriginal children and young people in Western Australia. By translating research findings into culturally inclusive, evidence-based resources, it aims to empower Aboriginal children, young people, and their families to understand and reduce the risks of UV radiation and prevent skin cancers.

Co-led by ACD trainee Dr Heather-Lynn Kessaris (Alawa and Mara woman) and Professor Asha Bowen at The Kids Research Institute Australia. Fellow Dr Bernadette Ricciardo is also an investigator on this project.

In collaboration with SWAMS, Derbarl Yerrigan Health Service Aboriginal Corporation, and Cancer Council Western Australia.

Learn more about the project here: thekids.org.au/projects/ngangk-ngabala-ngoonda-sun-safety/

Let’s continue to celebrate children’s health by supporting community-led research with culture and connection at the heart of prevention.

August is Psoriasis Awareness Month.

Psoriasis is characterised by the development of red scaly areas of skin. It is not contagious and 1.6 million Australians live with this chronic skin condition.

Living with psoriasis can be challenging. Seeking professional help from a dermatologist can significantly improve quality of life and help manage psoriasis symptoms more effectively.

Psoriasis Australia is one of the valued Patient Support Groups we proudly work with to raise awareness and promotes understanding of psoriatic diseases. Psoriasis Australia offer advocacy, information and support for all individuals impacted by psoriasis.

This week is Chronic Pain Australia’s National Pain Week, raising awareness of the experiences of people living with chronic pain.

A number of chronic dermatologic conditions can be associated with significant pain requiring long-term pain management in addition to treatment of the primary skin disease. If you suffer from a chronic dermatological condition make sure you discuss any pain you may be experiencing with your GP or dermatologist.

Connecting with Patient Support Groups can provide practical and emotional support and resources to help people, their carers and families living with chronic skin conditions that cause pain in many ways.
