Former politician Nick Xenophon is on a mission to regain his smile, recently undergoing facial reconstruction and reanimation surgery here at North Shore Private Hospital.

When a complication during a previous brain surgery in South Australia left him with facial palsy on his right side, he admits he became “a bit of a recluse”.

“It just feels awkward. It’s almost like I don’t want to subject people looking at me. I just keep to myself as much as I can.”

A Current Affair documented his journey with Dr Catherine Meller, who performed a complex surgery with the goal of improving facial symmetry and reanimating his facial muscles.

Channel 7 sports presenter Mel McLaughlin is sharing her story after being diagnosed with lung cancer late last year and undergoing surgery here at North Shore Private Hospital.

Her tumour was removed by Dr Levi Bassin and our team using cutting-edge robotic technology. The same cancer claimed the life of her big sister a decade ago.

“The reason why I wanted to do it is not to talk about me,” she said. “It’s awareness. It’s the biggest cancer killer in the country. It’s got a terrible stigma. I feel like I owe it to my sister.”
