This Thank You Thursday we’re celebrating and congratulating Karen Humphries, recognised as a 2025 Westfield Local Heroes Finalist for Westfield Hornsby!

Thanks to Westfield Local Heroes, Karen received a $5,000 grant to support the CanSupport Survivorship Program - helping people rebuild their lives during and after cancer treatment.

After four and half months in the Royal North Shore Hospital ICU after having body paralysis from Guillain-Barré syndrome, Roh began rehabilitation at Ryde Hospital. Working with his physiotherapist Jillian, he learned to move again — celebrating every small success together.

“Many people have played their role in my recovery. I’m extremely grateful to each and every one of them.”

Roh spent the festive season in hospital, but it wasn’t what he expected. “It was surprisingly special,” he recalls.

After four months he was able to eat - just in time to enjoy the baked Christmas treats! The nurses decorated the ward and made it feel like family.

Even in the toughest moments, their kindness kept his spirits high.

To kick off our Christmas Appeal – Meet Roh

With no warning, Roh suddenly collapsed. He was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome - a rare autoimmune disease that causes rapid muscle weakness and paralysis. He couldn’t move, eat, speak, or even breathe on his own.

During his time at Royal North Shore Hospital’s ICU, Roh recalls the nurses’ incredible level of care and says they were genuinely happy to see his progress and cheered any small step forward he made.

This Thank You Thursday, we would like to give a shout out to the mermaids, pirates, butterflies and much-loved book characters from Froebel St Leonards Early Learning Centre! The little legends brought colour, cuteness and generosity to us.

As part of their Costumes for Cancer fundraiser, the children learned about philanthropy through a hands-on journey: they created donation boxes, dressed up in their favourite costumes, collected and counted donations and visited the hospital to give their contribution to cancer researcher Dr Julius Kim.

Their efforts raised funds for cancer research and also made a meaningful connection to their local hospital and the power of giving.

Thank you to these inspiring young change makers and their educators for showing us that no one is too small to make a big difference!

On Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day, we pause to remember all the little ones gone too soon and the parents who carry their memory every day.

After losing her son Kento, born at 26 weeks, Tei and her family endured unimaginable grief. In time she found healing in connection, sharing her story, and giving back to the Royal North Shore Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit team who compassionately cared for them.
