This is a story worth slowing down for ❤️
When Brent’s close friend and hairdresser Stuart, affectionately called “Frog”, was admitted to the Palliative Care and Geriatric Evaluation and Management unit at Mona Vale Hospital (MVH) in 2024, Brent wanted to bring him comfort.
Stuart, who was living with oesophageal cancer, encouraged Brent to bring in his guitar – not just for him, but for other patients and healthcare workers. Hearing Brent play brought moments of calm during a difficult time.
So Brent picked up his 12-string guitar, an instrument he taught himself to play, and filled the unit with music. After his friend passed away, Brent chose to continue playing in his honour. Each month, he returns to the unit, now with a repertoire of more than 170 songs. He has also played at weddings and the memorial services held at the unit.
Clinical Support Officer at MVH, Kate Vaughan says Brent's presence makes a profound difference.
"It's wonderful to hear Brent play. His music is soothing and it brings comfort to everyone who hears him. We're so grateful that he shares his gift with us."
This National Volunteer Week, we celebrate people like Brent who turn compassion into action and in doing so, create moments of peace, connection and hope.
